Prof. Olayiwola A. OLUWASOLA


Dr A. Olayiwola Oluwasola is a Professor of Pathology and Consultant Pathologist to the University College Hospital Ibadan. His primary area of research interest is in gastrointestinal pathology. He is engaged in research to elucidate the epidemiology, pathology and specific role,as well asimmuno-pathogenesis of the bacterium helicobacter pylori in the development of the various gastro-duodenal conditions (including chronic gastritis, gastric ulcer, duodenal ulcer and gastric cancer) prevalent in our community. Currently, he plans to undertakea genetic epidemiology study of the interplay between host genetic factors such as ‘human inflammatory cytokines (IL-1B and IL-1RN, IL-8, IL-10, IL-12 and TNFα)gene polymorphisms, helicobacter pylori strain types as well as host gastric microbiome as possible determinants of his to pathological features of gastritis and susceptibility to pre-cancerous changes or other possible clinical outcomes in helicobacter pylori positive Nigerian patients with dyspepsia. He also has keen interest in the epidemiology and pathology of Breast cancer and Malignant Lymphomas.

Recently he contributed to the development of an integrated system based, community –oriented and Competency-driven Curriculum for Medical students in this institution and he is presently involved in the development of a Medical education unit for the university of Ibadan. He also has a passion for Continuous Quality Improvement in Pathology practice driven by commitment to strict adherence to International best practices and International standard guidelines for diagnostic pathology.
