Mr.  Ibunkunoluwa J. AFOLAMI

Personal Statement

I am Ibukun Afolami, a lecturer and scientist in the department of Human Nutrition College of Medicine, University of Ibadan. I have a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc) and a Master of Science (M.Sc) degrees in Biochemistry from the University of Lagos and University of Ibadan respectively. I am currently a Ph.D fellow in the Nutrition Division at Wageningen University, the Netherlands.

My primary research interest is to have a thorough understanding of the dynamics involved in malnutrition using epidemiology and molecular biology as my basic tools. Ultimately, I aim at providing practical, realistic, evidence-based and sustainable interventions to address the problem of malnutrition in Nigeria and on the African Continent. This I plan to achieve through active multi-disciplinary collaborations with colleagues and scientists all over the world.

My most recent research is focused on evaluating the efficacy of biofortification in addressing the problem of vitamin A deficiency in children who are most vulnerable. In collaboration with Wageningen University, HarvestPlus and the International Institute for Tropical Agriculture (IITA) we intend to provide an answer to the question on the efficacy of beta-carotene biofortified yellow cassava (vitamin A cassava) in contributing to the total body pool of retinol and reducing the risk of vitamin A deficiency.
