Historical Background

The Ophthalmology Unit started as a part of the Department of Surgery in 1962.  It later became a full-fledged department under the headship of  Professor  Kodilinye. The primary functions of the department include training of medical students (MBBS) during their special posting rotation. A block of lectures are also given to B.Sc. Nursing students of the Department of Nursing on ophthalmic diseases and eye care by the department. Postgraduate programs in the department include that for resident doctors a six-year course through which they can be certified by the National Postgraduate medical College and/or the West African Postgraduate Medical College. Other training courses organized by the department include the basic science module of the West African College of Surgeons Diploma in Ophthalmology course which trains doctors with basic medical qualifications to provide secondary level eye-care to Nigerians yearly, Intra ocular lens courses, and diagnostic and clinical courses for the different subspecialties of cornea and anterior segment, glaucoma, retina, paediatric ophthalmology, oculoplasty and neuro ophthalmology. Community ophthalmology courses are also organized for various levels of community eye care workers.  The MSc/ MPh / PhD  Ophthalmology program has been approved by the University senate and is currently been packaged for accreditation by National Universities Commission. In research, the department has been in the fore front of  several Nigeria Field surveys and clinical research are consistently planned and executed by individuals and groups in the department. Publications, memoranda and data emanating from research in the department have been invaluable to the development of ophthalmology inAfricasouth of theSahara.

Rational:

To be able to meet the challenges of a globalized world there is need for concerted effort for steady development and progress. New frontiers need to be established, old alliances need to be renewed and new international and local collaborations need to be established.

The Department signed a memoranda of understanding to improve its service and training capacity with the International Agency for the prevention of blindness in year 2006, with the result that the Department was upgraded to the status of an African regional centre for residency and other eye care personnel training (the IAPB-CARL ZIES program). Daily eye and subspecialty clinics and surgeries were introduced. Subspecialists in retina, orbit  oculoplasty, and paediatric ophthalmology were also trained with the assistance of the University College Hospital and ICO.

Mission and vision:

My mission and vision is in line with that of the University of Ibadan and also in line with strategic plan of the Department of Ophthalmology: i.e. to become a world class institute for ophthalmic training, research and eye care.

Undergraduate teaching

  • To train undergraduates to have the right attitude, knowledge and clinical skills in ophthalmology required by a twenty first century medical graduate.

Post graduate training programs

  • Will work hard to ensure realization of establishing the proposed institute of ophthalmology whose land has already been allocated by the University College Hospital, Ibadan.
  • To train world class ophthalmologists and allied professionals who can stand their ground in any part of the world.
  • The MSc /MPh/ PhD Ophthalmology program will be vigorously pursued and commenced as soon as NUC accreditation is obtained for it.
  •   Curricula will be developed and various shot term and long term post graduate courses introduced for the various subspecialties.

Research

  • To provide enabling environment for cutting edge research in all aspects of ophthalmology and related fields.

Building Bridges and international collaboration

  • Old alliances will be strengthened and new collaborations made both nationally and internationally.
  • Collaboration with catholic eye hospitals will be supported in line with the vision of the ICO to further provide opportunities for training and research.

Clinical services

  • The various subspecialties will be further strengthened.

Staff development

  • This will be encouraged and supported.
  • A reward  system to encourage hard work will be introduced through introduction of an annual ‘best staff’ award  for the various categories of staff.

Staff welfare

  • Staff welfare and comfort will be properly looked into to ensure harmony and encourage hard work.
