    Personal Statement

My training is in the field of Clinical Bacteriology and Venereology. I have worked extensively in the field of Venereology for more than 25 years. My research has focused on sexually transmitted infection both in males and high risk females, including HIV/AIDS positive patients. I am the Director of the Special Treatment Clinic and Venereal Diseases and Treponematoses Research and Teaching Laboratories (A WHO Collaborating centre and a Reference laboratory for STDs in Nigeria). From 1990 till date, I have been a Consultant Clinical Microbiologist and Professor of Clinical Microbiology in the Department of Medical Microbiology and Parasitology, College of Medicine, University of Ibadan, University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, Nigeria. I lecture different categories of students; Both Undergraduates and Postgraduates.  I have over the years being involved in the yearly organization of a 4-weeks intensive, practical oriented training course on sexually transmitted infections and also 6-week intensive, practical oriented training course on Control and Prevention of Hospital Acquired Infections. I examined many PhDs,supervised and examined many Postgraduate Medical Fellowship dissertations.I was involved in the phase 3, multi-center, fully-masked, randomized, placebo- controlled trial of 1.0%C3IG (Savvy -Microbicides) and HIV infection in Ibadan, Nigeria as Principal Investigator.  I have conducted various research works on high risk women especially Female Commercial sex workers, in Ibadan, Nigeria in the last fifteen years.   I was appointed as the Chairman, Technical Working Committee on Sexually Transmitted Infections by the Federal Ministry of Health from the year 2011 till date. My research experience includes being PI of a 1 year University of Ibadan Senate Grant Award funded (completed 2010) to assess the microbicidal effect of indigenous probiotic candidates in the prevention of sexually transmissible diseases caused by pathogenic candida species. ..) .I am the Co-PI for NHI Project that intends to comparatively analyze vaginal microbiome and their association with HIV and HPV among African women and also Community Acquired Pneumonia and Invasive Bacterial Diseases among under 5 children in Igbo Ora, Nigeria.
