Prof. Jesse A.O. OTEGBAYO

MBBS, Cert. Gastro, MSc., PhD., FUICC, FWACP, FACG., MNIM

I have been engaged in research works that cut across the field of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Oncology and Medical Education, since 1998. My focus has however been principally on the pathobiology of microbial agents (viral, bacterial and parasitic) in gastrointestinal and liver systems. To this end I have studied the pathology of viral hepatitis B and C in acute and chronic liver diseases, novel approaches to the diagnosis of, and the impact of chronic sequelae of hepatitis B and C on the liver, which are chronic hepatitis, cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. I have also studied the pathology and novel diagnostic approaches of Helicobacter pylori infection and its effects on the gut especially in patients with dyspepsia. In collaboration with colleagues within and outside Nigeria, we studied the interrelationship between HBV, HCV, p53 codon 249 mutation and aflatoxin B1 in the pathogenesis of hepatocellular carcinoma. The publications emanating from my research activities are listed in my publications above and are listed in major research and medical databases like Scientific Commons, Biomed Experts, Scopus, PubMed, Medline, ISI, AJOL, Pubget, ResearchGate, Labmeeting, Index Medicus, Esrnexus, Hepatitis Experts and Google Scholar, among others. I am also involved in research work on the immunopathogenesis of viral hepatitis, phylogeny of hepatitis B and development of better diagnostic ELISA-based test for detection of hepatitis B surface antigen.

Lately I have developed interest in infectious diseases, tumour markers and medical oncology.
