                                           BRIEF HISTORY  OF THE DEPARTMENT

 

The Dental School, University of Ibadan was established in 1975 with technical assistance from the Dental School of Newcastle – Upon –Tyne. By 1977, the first set of dental students who were 19 in number began their clinical training with four full time academic staff members and two associate lecturers.  Visiting lecturers were invited especially from abroad to teach in block postings in sub-disciplines that had no full-time lecturers.  The school was accorded full recognition in June 1978, following visitation by a Panel of the Nigerian Medical Council. This single dentistry department was split into four autonomous departments in August 1981 and was approved by the Senate on 23rd April, 1985.

  The Department of Restorative Dentistry was formed from the Department of          Dentistry in 1981.  Presently, the Department has seven (7) academic members of staff as listed.

The first Acting Head of Department was Dr. S.P. Luthra.  The headship of this department was subsequently taken over after Dr. S.P. Luthra as follows:

          Dr. O.O. Falomo                 1996-1999

          Dr.  A.  Ogunyinka              1999-2001

          Dr. O.O. Dosumu               2000 – 2012

          Dr.Deborah M. Ajayi           2012 – till date

          The department at the moment has 2 main units namely:

        Conservative Dentistry

          Prosthetic Dentistry

        The Department functions in the following sub disciplines/units

   Phantom head unit (Operative Technique)

   Conservative Dentistry

   Removable Prosthodontics

   Fixed Prosthodontics

    Endodontics

-          Science of dental materials

-          Dental implantology which is a new addition

The department has 3 laboratories for use for the undergraduate and postgraduate students

1              Operative Technique Laboratory (Phantom Head)

2              Prosthetic Laboratory

3              Advanced Prosthodontic (Vamed) Laboratory

                                       The Philosophy

 

The Department of Restorative Dentistryaims at providing training in dentistry comparable to the standard obtainable in advanced countries of the world.  The philosophy is to offer a sound training that will ensure:

1.    establishment of  a scientific foundation  for understanding the principles of conservative dentistry and prosthodontics

2.    acquisition of adequate knowledge, skill and clinical competence expected of a dental surgeon in the community as well as a professional attitude and approach to solving problems

3.    development of a leadership qualities in the trainees to enable them direct and head a dental team

4.     To have the ability to adapt to variation in local communities and working conditions and be innovative.
