BIODATA OF PROFESSOR ADE FATAI ADENIYI

Fatai Adeniyi was born on 31 July 1973 and hails from Kishi, the Headquarters of Irepo Local Government Area of Oyo State. He began his elementary education at the Bagudo Model Primary School in the old Sokoto State (now Kebbi State) before he relocated for better performance to Ejire Nursery and Primary School, Erin-Ile, Kwara State where he started all over. He had his secondary education at Anglican Grammar School, Ogbomoso, Oyo State. He graduated from the University of Ibadan in 1999 with a B.Sc. Degree in Physiotherapy. By some divine arrangement, Professor Adeniyi found himself in positions of leadership throughout his school days. He was the Head Boy in his primary school, the Head Boy in his secondary school and the President of the Association of Physiotherapy Students during his university days. His internship and National Youth Service were at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital. While on his master’s degree programme, he worked briefly as a Physiotherapist at the General Hospital, Oyo town in Oyo State. At the completion of his master’s degree, he proceeded immediately to the Ph.D programme which he completed in May 2007.

Professor Adeniyi started as Lecturer II at the Bayero University, Kano between 2004 and 2007. He was appointed Consultant at the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, Kano in 2007. He joined the University of Ibadan as Lecturer I in January 2008. He was promoted Senior Lecturer in 2011 and Professor in 2016. At the University of Ibadan, Professor Adeniyi held many administrative posts cutting across the Department, Faculty, College, and the University at large. He was Sub-Dean (Undergraduate), Nursing and Physiotherapy programmes in the Faculty of Clinical Sciences, Assistant Warden, Tedder Hall, Congregation Representative in the Senate, member of Senate Business Committee, member of the College Academic Board and an Advisory Board Member of the College Research and Innovation Management Unit. He was Congregation Representative in the University Ceremonial Committee, member of the Senior Staff Disciplinary Committees “Panels J & K”, member, Board of Management of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital, representative of the University Community on the Internal Revenue Board and a member of the Governing Council of Osun State College of Technology, Esa-Oke, Osun State, Nigeria.

He was a Professorial Assessor and External Examiner in the Bachelor and Ph.D. Examinations of the University of Lagos, University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus, Lead City University, Ibadan, the University of Witwatersrand, South Africa, Bayero University, Kano and the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife. He was a Visiting Senior Lecturer at the University of Maiduguri, a Visiting Professor at the University of Benin, an Extraordinary Professor of Lifestyle Diseases at the North-West University, South Africa, and an Adjunct Professor and Consultant to Chrisland University, Nigeria. He is also expert supervisor of theses on the Pan African University, Life and Earth Sciences Institute (PAULESI) programme. He was a member of the Doctor of Physical Therapy Curriculum Committee for Nigerian universities and an Expert on Resource Verification and accreditations to the Nigerian Universities Commission and the Medical Rehabilitation Therapists Registration Board of Nigeria with services rendered across several universities in Nigeria. He is currently the Vice Chairman, Academic Committee of National Professional Medical Rehabilitation Examination. He was Head of the Department of Physiotherapy, University of Ibadan for a brief period before he was appointed the Deputy Provost of the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan, the position he occupied for two terms from August 2020 to July 2024.

At the professional circle, Professor Adeniyi is a registrant of the Medical Rehabilitation Therapists (Registration) Board of Nigeria and the Health and Care Professions Council of the United Kingdom. He is also a Fellow of the Postgraduate Physiotherapy College and a member of Council of the College. He was inaugurated as a Fellow of the Nigeria Society of Physiotherapy in 2023. He is affiliated to many professional bodies within and outside Nigeria some of which are: The Nigeria Society of Physiotherapy, The International Diabetes Epidemiology Group, and The International Society for Behavioural Nutrition and Physical Activity. He is currently the Chief Partner of the Partnership Centre for the Prevention and Control of Chronic Diseases, and a Co-Partner of the Centre for Early Development, Learning and Care. He is also an Executive Board Member and Director of Physical Activity of the Nigerian Heart Foundation and the pioneer Director of Exercise in Medicine, Nigeria National Centre, an agency of the American College of Sports Medicine with sister branches in about 60 countries across the globe. He was the Guest Speaker at the Official Inauguration of the Faculty of Medical Rehabilitation of the University of Medical Sciences, Ondo.

Professor Adeniyi’s research focuses mainly on physical activity and health promotion across populations of people with noncommunicable diseases, especially diabetes mellitus. He is a beneficiary of many local and international travel grants, career development awards and research grants some of which are: the Joint National Institutes of Health (NIH) & the Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute Awards, the Department of Health and Human Services Award, the McArthur Foundation Award, the Joint International Chair on Cardio-metabolic Risks & the International Diabetes Epidemiology Group awards, the Senate Research Grant, and the Tetfund Research Grant. He was also a recipient of the University of Ibadan Postgraduate School Scholarship Award. He has supervised over 90 projects and dissertations across all levels of education including B.Physiotherapy, M.Sc. & Ph.Ds. He has to his credit over 120 publications in peer reviewed journals, technical reports and books within and outside Nigeria. He has also presented over 60 public lectures cutting across diverse fields from healthcare to education, science and research, politics, community service and philanthropy among several others.

Among others, Professor Adeniyi was a Visiting Scholar to a number of frontline international diabetes centres including the Centre for Diabetes and Endocrinology, Johannesburg, South Africa, and the Madras Diabetes Research Foundation & WHO Collaborating Centre for Noncommunicable Disease Prevention and Control, and the International Diabetes Federation Centre of Diabetes Education based in Chennai, India. He was also a trainee at the Diabetes Prevention Centre of the University of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA and the Emory Diabetes Research Centre at Atlanta, Georgia, USA.

Aside his administrative, academic and research endeavours, Professor Adeniyi is a family man and a community leader. He served as Assistant Secretary-General, Secretary General and later the President of the Ibadan College of Medicine Alumni Association (ICOMAA) Worldwide. He was Chairman of Alumni Matters of the University College Hospital from 2019 to 2020. He is also the current Chairman of Kishi Progressive Union (KPU), Ibadan Branch. He was the Co-Speaker of The Kishi Parliament and Chairman of Education Committee of the Parliament. He is also a member of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and Senior Staff Club, University of Ibadan. He is happily married to Dr. Yetunde Adeniyi, a Senior Lecturer at the University of Ibadan, a Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist at the University College Hospital, and Director, Centre for Early Development, Learning and Care and Daisy Atlantic Schools. They are blessed with three children.
