PROFILE OF PROFESSOR OLATUNDE OWOEYE
Professor Olatunde Owoeye is a distinguished Nigerian academic and medical professional, born on September 24, 1956, in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State. He began his educational journey with exceptional academic performance, earning a Division One distinction in his West African School Certificate before proceeding to Government College, Ibadan, and later the University of Ibadan, where he obtained his M.B.B.S degree in 1983. During his medical training, he won notable prizes in Neurosurgery and Paediatrics. After completing his NYSC in Kano State, he worked as a Medical Officer in several hospitals before returning to academia to pursue postgraduate studies in Anatomy, earning both his M.Sc. and Ph.D. from the University of Ibadan.
He joined the University of Ibadan in 2001 as a Lecturer and steadily rose through the academic ranks to become a Professor of Anatomy in 2018. Over the years, he has played significant roles in teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students, particularly in gross anatomy, histology, and neuroanatomy. He has also held several administrative positions, including Acting and Substantive Head of the Department of Anatomy, and has contributed extensively to faculty, college, and university committees, reflecting his commitment to academic leadership and institutional development.
Professor Owoeye’s research focuses on neuroanatomy, with particular emphasis on neuroprotection, neurotrauma, and neural regeneration using pharmacological and plant-based antioxidants. He is a prolific scholar with over 85 publications in reputable journals, a strong citation record, and supervision of numerous postgraduate theses, including Ph.D. and M.Sc. candidates. His contributions to science have earned him recognition within and beyond Nigeria, including international research experience as a visiting scientist in Pakistan and active participation as an external examiner and journal reviewer across several institutions.
Beyond academia, he has contributed to professional bodies and community service through involvement in medical associations, faith-based organizations, and public service initiatives. He is a Fellow of the Anatomical Society of Nigeria and a member of several local and international scientific societies. Widely respected for his teaching excellence, he has received multiple awards from students and commendations from many institutions. Professor Owoeye is married with children and grandchildren, and he continues to serve as a leading figure in medical education and research in Nigeria. He continues to contribute actively to teaching, research, and academic leadership at the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan, maintaining a legacy of excellence in medical education and neuroscience research.
