COLLEGE OF MEDICINE, UNIVERSITY OF IBADAN JOINS LEADING HEALTH ORGANIZATIONS TO PROVIDE DIRECTION FOR SUSTAINABLE POST-OMICRON COVID-19 STRATEGY

The College of Medicine, University of Ibadan (CoMUI) is one of 11 leading health institutions globally to release a Joint Declaration bringing priorities for the Post Omicron COVID-19 era to the fore. Other institutions in the Global Consortium are the Africa CDC; African Population and Health Research Center; Amref Health Africa; Andean Health Organization; Center for Indonesia’s Strategic Development Initiatives; School of Public Health, Cayetano Heredia University; ONE Campaign; and WACI Health. The Rockefeller Foundation and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation had supported the convening and report. 

The report highlights action areas such as access to vaccines, the strengthening of systems locally and nationally and investing to ensure the future is pandemic proof. Ensuring accountable leadership is also a key aspect of the report.

A quote by Professor Isaac Adewole, FAS, member of the consortium highlights the need for strong partnerships globally to prevent future pandemics: "There is an urgent need for renewed and sustained global solidarity to confront the realities of the current pandemic and prevent the occurrence of a future one." The former Provost of CoMUI, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan and Minister of Health of the Federal Republic of Nigeria stressed the importance of strong global partnerships to prevent future pandemics.
