On behalf of the management team, staff and students of the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan (CoMUI), the Provost, Professor T.O. Ogundiran FAS heartily welcomed the new Chairman of Council of the University of Ibadan, His Excellency, Chief Adebisi Akande, CFR to the college community.
The event took place at the Paul Hendrickse Lecture Theatre, CoMUI on Wednesday December 4, 2024. Present at the occasion were: the principal officers from the University of Ibadan, led by Professor K. O. Adebowale FAS, mni (Vice Chancellor, University of Ibadan) and principal officers from the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan led by Professor J. A. Otegbayo (Chief Medical Director, UCH). Also, in attendance were: CoMUI management team and members of teaching and non-teaching staff of the college. Among them were: Professor S. B. Olaleye (Deputy Provost, CoMUI), Mr. A. E. Odedele (Secretary to the College), Mr. S. O. Ayansina (Financial Controller), Dr. Grace Ajuwon (Medical Librarian), Professor Oyeronke Odunola (Dean, Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences), Professor T. A. Lawal (Dean, Faculty of Clinical Sciences), Professor M. D. Dairo (Dean, Faculty of Public Health), Professor B. M. Kolude (Dean, Faculty of Dentistry), Professor F. A. Fehintola (Dean, Faculty of Basic Clinical Sciences), Professor Prisca O. Adejumo (Dean, Faculty of Nursing) and Professor S.I. Omokhodion (President, Ibadan College of Medicine Alumni Association, Worldwide).
On hand to welcome Chief Adebisi Akande; who as chairman of Council statutorily doubles as the Chairman, Court of Governors, College of Medicine, University of Ibadan were some of the past Provosts of CoMUI namely: Emeritus Professor E, Oluwole Akande (pioneer Provost, CoMUI), Emeritus Professor Ayodele Falase, Professor M. T. Shokunbi, Professor A. O. Omigbodun, Professor O. O. Akinyinka, Professor E. O. Olapade Olaopa, Professor Olayinka O. Omigbodun (immediate past Provost, CoMUI); and Professor J. T. Arotiba (former Dean, Faculty of Dentistry).
While introducing the new Pro-chancellor of the Premier University to the distinguished members of the CoMUI community, Professor Ogundiran acknowledged Chief Adebisi Akande as an elder statesman whose contributions to the progress of the country can never be underestimated. Goodwill messages were delivered by two representatives of the past provosts in persons of: Professor Akinyinka Omigbodun (Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology) and Professor M. T. Shokunbi (Department of Anatomy) respectively. Thereafter, questions were entertained from members of the college community.
In his response, Chief Adebisi Akande thanked the College of Medicine management and the entire community for the special honour bestowed on him with the warm reception. He promised to work in synergy with the Vice Chancellor and the Provost in addressing the issues raised and proffering solutions to the myriad of challenges identified like: incentivizing the staff responsible for preclinical training, epileptic power supply, irregularities in the salary structures of government workers among others. The event was anchored by Dr. Nse Odunaiya (Chairperson, College ceremonials committee; and rounded up with closing remark said by Professor S. B. Olaleye.
