Biography:
Dr. Titilayo Odetola (RN, Ph.D, FWAPCNM)
I am a lecturer (Reader) and the current Head of the Department (Community Health Nursing), in the Faculty of Nursing, College of Medicine, University of Ibadan. As a dynamic and up-coming scholar, I have interest in collaborating with other outstanding researchers to reduce the currently high morbidity and consequent mortality associated with pregnancy, childbirth and chronic diseases in Nigeria, howbeit through community and mobile-health technology approach.
As a PhD holder in Community Health Nursing and a University of California trained and certified Telehealth expert, I have been involved as the PI in conceptualizing, designing, implementing a laudable research titled “Effects of mobile health nursing intervention on maternal health services uptake among pregnant women in Oyo Senatorial District of Oyo State” which attracted three international research grants (African Doctoral Dissertation Research Fellowship (ADDRF, 2013-2015), McArthur research grant, 2009 and Medical Education Partnership Initiative in Nigeria, (MEPIN/NIH) Research Award, 2013). This research aimed at training nurses and empowering registered pregnant women in rural areas with mobile telephones facilitated communication over an 8-month period providing pregnant women with free voice calls and health promotion text messages from their primary nurses. This successful research has also produced articles already published for publications by revered journals and presentations at local and international conferences. With this experience, I have learnt the act of collaborating, administering and coordinating various nursing grants/resources.
As a community health nursing expert, I have been involved in training public health nurses and reaching out to clients living in the rural communities where there is currently a dearth of skilled health professionals with health promotion and disease prevention calls and messages. Furthermore, I have also empowered clients and their significant others in improving self-efficacy in the management of Tuberculosis, Hypertension and Diabetes Mellitus. I recently utilized a postdoctoral fellowship grant which equipped me with qualitative research skills and empowered me to provide leadership and mentoring for junior nurses.
I am a Principal Investigator and Co-investigator in several research grants multi-nationally. To mention but a few, I was a co-investigator on a research project titled “Social Mobile to Educate, Connect and Empower Alumni from Selected Nursing Institutions in Oyo and Osun states of Nigeria”. This is a 3-year project (2016-2018) being implemented in collaboration with the University of Applied Sciences and Arts, Switzerland and funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation.
Area of Specialization: mhealth; community health; nursing; community midwifery; maternal health
