Biography of Professor John Ayodele Olaniyi

Professor John Ayodele Olaniyi was born in Kumasi, Ghana, to the family of the late Mr. Nathaniel Olaniyi and the late Madam Susannah Titilade Olaniyi of Alala’s Compound, Oyan, Odo-Otin Local Government, Osun State. Although he began his early education in Ghana, he returned to Nigeria to attend St. Paul’s Anglican Primary School, Oyan, after the expulsion of Nigerians from Ghana. He later obtained a Modern School Certificate before advancing to class two at Fakunle Comprehensive High School, Osogbo, where he completed his West African School Certificate with distinctions in 1980.

In the same year, he gained admission to Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State, to study Medicine and Surgery. He graduated in record time with a B.Sc. in Health Sciences (1984) and MBChB (1987). He completed his housemanship with the Oyo State Hospital Management Board in 1988 and served in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in the then Plateau State in 1989.

Following his service, Professor Olaniyi briefly worked with the Oyo State Hospital Management Board as a medical officer. In June 1991, he joined the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, for Residency Training in Haematology (Laboratory Medicine). He became a Member of the National Postgraduate Medical College in 1994 and a Fellow of the West African College of Physicians in April 1998.

His academic career began in June 1998, when he was appointed Lecturer I and Consultant Haematologist at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso. In February 2000, he transitioned to the University of Ibadan (UI) and UCH as Lecturer I, and by June 2001, he became a Consultant Haematologist. Professor Olaniyi was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2003, earned an M.Sc. in Chemical Pathology from the University of Ibadan in 2007, became a Reader in 2013, and was promoted to Professor in 2016.

He has received several research grants from the University of Ibadan Senate, including Individual Research Grants in 2006 and 2007, and a Group Senate Research Grant in 2010. In the same year, he was a visiting scholar at the University of Chicago, where he studied immunophenotyping through a joint UICC/Global Health Scholarship.

Professor Olaniyi is a member of numerous professional organizations, including the Medical and Dental Association of Nigeria (since 1988), the West African Postgraduate Medical College (since 1998), the Nigerian Society for Haematology and Blood Transfusion (since 1998), the African Society for Blood Transfusion (since 2001), the American Society of Clinical Oncology (since 2011), and the American Society of Haematology (since 2012).

As a Consultant Haematologist, Professor Olaniyi is actively involved in managing patients with various haematological disorders. He is also deeply engaged in the training of postgraduate students (residents) in Haematology through regular ward rounds, clinical teachings, seminars, and supervision of their research.

In his role as a resource person for the West African College of Physicians (WACP), he has been a trainer and an examiner at the Fellowship examinations in Haematology (Laboratory Medicine) since 2003. He currently serves as the Host Examiner for Haematology and was the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) Chairman for the 48th Nigerian Society for Haematology and Blood Transfusion, held from August 28–30, 2024.

Within the University of Ibadan, Professor Olaniyi has held various administrative positions. He has served as a member of the Curriculum Committee, represented the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences on the Appointments and Promotions Panel, and currently represents the Faculty of Basic Clinical Sciences and the College of Medicine in the Appointments and Promotions Committee. He was also part of the organizing committee for the 7th Unibadan Conference of Biomedical Research (UCBR) in September 2021. He is a member of the University Senate and serves on several editorial boards, including the African Journal of Medicine and Medical Sciences and Annals of Ibadan Postgraduate Medicine.

With over 80 publications in both local and international journals, Professor Olaniyi’s research interests lie in Haematology Oncology, particularly in the study of leukemias, lymphomas, and multiple myelomas. He was awarded a Global Health Scholarship to understudy immunophenotyping at the University of Chicago in 2010, facilitated by Professor Funmilayo Olopade. He has attended numerous conferences and workshops globally, including the American Society of Haematology (ASH) meetings in Chicago, San Francisco, and California, and the WACP meetings in Dakar (Senegal), Liberia, and The Gambia.

Professor Olaniyi served as the Acting Head of the Department of Haematology from August 2017 to July 2019, and he currently holds the position of Head of Department, which he assumed in August 2023. He has also served as an external examiner for MBBS Part II Professional Examinations at several Nigerian universities, including the University of Maiduguri, Olabisi Onabanjo University, and Osun State University. Additionally, he has been a postgraduate (M.Sc.) external examiner at Obafemi Awolowo University.

Professor Olaniyi is married to Dr. Adenike Olaitan Olaniyi (Ph.D.), the current Principal of the School of Nursing, University College Hospital, Ibadan. They are blessed with two lovely daughters.
