Professor Olusegun Olusina Akinyinka…once upon a Provost
The Provost, College of Medicine, University of Ibadan (CoMUI) Prof. T. O. Ogundiran, FAS on behalf of the Management, Staff and Students of CoMUI felicitates and salutes Prof. Olusegun Olusina Akinyinka, the 9th Provost, CoMUI, as he retires from the services of the University of Ibadan on February 7,2025.
Professor Olusegun Olusina Akinyinka, mni MB;BS (Ibadan), Ph.D. (Southampton, UK), FMCPaed (Nigeria), FRCPCH (UK), MD, was born at the Kano General Hospital in Kano, on the 7th of February, 1955.
He started primary school education in Chafe (now Tsafe), Zamfara State and completed it in Abeokuta, Ogun State. He proceeded to the Comprehensive High School, Ayetoro, Ogun State for his Secondary Education between 1966 and 1972.
In 1973, he gained admission to the University of Ibadan where he graduated with MB;BS Degree in 1978. He obtained Fellowship of the Nigerian Postgraduate Medical College in Paediatrics (FMCPaed) in 1987 and had subspecialty training in paediatric gastroenterology at the King’s College Hospital, London. Driven by his desire for academics, he obtained a Ph.D. Degree in Pharmacology at the University of Southampton, United Kingdom in 1996. He was conferred with the Fellowship of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (FRCPCH) in 2007 and also awarded an MD Degree by the Nigerian Postgraduate Medical College in 2021. He was at the prestigious National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru where he was awarded with the membership of the National Institute (mni) in 2014.
As a Resident doctor
Professor Akinyinka joined the service of University of Ibadan as a Lecturer I in 1988 and rose through the ranks to become a Professor of Paediatrics in 2000. He served as Honorary Consultant Paediatrician at the University College Hospital, Ibadan between 1988 till today. He served as the Ag. Head, Department of Paediatrics between 1997 and 1998, Dean, Faculty of Clinical Sciences, University of Ibadan between 2004 and 2006. He was elected unopposed as the 9th Provost, College of Medicine, University of Ibadan in 2010 and served till 2014.
As a transformative leader in medical education, Professor Akinyinka pioneered innovations that continue to shape the field. In 2011, he secured the approval of the Senate of the University of Ibadan to establish the first College of Medicine Education Unit (CMEU) and Clinical Skills Laboratory.
In 2016, Prof. Akinyinka was appointed as the Pioneer Provost of the College of Medical Sciences, Edo University, Iyamho, Edo State, Nigeria.
Professor O.O.Akinyinka is happily married to Mrs Valentina Olubisi Akinyinka and the union is blessed with three children and lovely grandchildren.
