The Provost of the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan (CoMUI), Professor T. O. Ogundiran (FAS), on behalf of the College management team, congratulates the University of Ibadan Medical Students’ Association (UIMSA) on their remarkable achievements at the Nigerian Medical Students Association (NiMSA) Southwest Convention. UIMSA emerged in first place for the fourth consecutive time in the quiz competition, held among ten selected universities across Southwest Nigeria. The team also secured six gold medals in the sports competition, recently concluded at Lagos State University (LASU).
In addition to their stellar performance in the quiz and sports competitions, the College’s Literary and Debate Club representatives excelled in the Southwest inter-school debate competition, where they proudly claimed the first position.
The delegation of UIMSA was led by its President, Joshua IniOluwa, accompanied by executives Abu Idris Meliat, Olu-Adegbola Folusho, Onyiuke Chidinma, Alimi Mubarak, and other members of the association. Mr. IniOluwa expressed deep gratitude to the College management for their unwavering support, acknowledging the confidence instilled by their esteemed lecturers, which contributed to the team's exceptional performance despite the challenges faced. He emphasized that UIMSA is eager to continue making the College proud as they prepare to represent the Southwest region alongside LASU in the upcoming National Quiz Competition next month.
Sports Achievements Highlighted
In reviewing their accomplishments in the sports competitions, UIMSA President Joshua IniOluwa spotlighted standout performances, especially by Oludehinwa Adura, a 400-level student, who won four gold medals in swimming—dominating the 50m and 100m backstroke, as well as the 50m and 100m freestyle events. Other gold medalists included Opara Charles, who triumphed in Men’s Table Tennis with a flawless 3-0 victory over his counterpart from the University of Lagos (AMSUL), and Emmanuel Soriwei, who secured gold in the 400m sprint as part of his impressive four-medal haul.
Both UIMSA Male and Female Football teams claimed silver medals in their respective matches. The men’s team lost 2-0 to Ambrose Alli University Medical Students’ Association (AAUMSA), while the women’s team played a goalless draw with LASU but fell 3-2 in a penalty shootout. Abigail Oyedokun won a silver medal in Women’s Ayo, while other silver medals were won in field events by Chidinma Onyiuke in Women’s Javelin and Emmanuel Soriwei in Men’s Long Jump, narrowly missing first place by 0.03m to a competitor from the University of Benin.
The final team sports medal for UIMSA was a bronze in Men’s Volleyball, secured with a 2-0 victory over AAUMSA. The athletics team added more bronze medals in the Men’s 4×400 Relay, Men’s 800m (by Olanrewaju Lekan), and Men’s 200m (by Emmanuel Soriwei). Bolaji Ebenezer and Abigail Oyedokun earned bronze medals in the Men’s and Women’s Shot Put events, respectively, while Shola Balogun and Ofumwengbe-Evba Eseosa added more bronzes in Women’s Table Tennis. The final bronze medal was won by Opeyemi Joseph in badminton.
Provost’s Remarks and Closing
The Provost, Professor Ogundiran FAS lauded the students for their commendable representation of the College, both academically and athletically. Reflecting on his own academic success alongside physical activity, he emphasized the importance of sports in reducing stress and enhancing cognitive performance. He encouraged the students to continue reflecting the excellence they’ve displayed in sports within their academics and to remain worthy ambassadors of CoMUI in all their endeavors.
Professor Ogundiran expressed his pride in the students' achievements, affirming that it was no surprise, as the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan, consistently attracts exceptional talents who excel in both academics and sports. He assured them of the College’s continued support as they strive to achieve even greater heights, both in their studies and in future competitions.
In a show of appreciation, UIMSA President Joshua IniOluwa presented a plaque of honor to the Provost and members of the College management team. Present at the event were Professor S. B. Olaleye (Deputy Provost), Professor T. A. Lawal (Dean, Faculty of Clinical Sciences), Mr. A. E. Odedele (Secretary to the College, represented by Mr. M. A. Raji, (Deputy Registrar/Faculty Officer FCS) Dr. Olayinka Egbokhare (Controller, Biomedical Communication Centre, represented by Mr. Edmund Killian), and Mr. Adesanmi. Adetule (Head, Information Technology Unit), among others.
The courtesy visit was not only a moment to celebrate UIMSA’s successes but also to strengthen the bond between the students and the College management, reaffirming CoMUI’s commitment to fostering an environment where students can thrive both academically and athletically.
