PROFESSOR S.B. OLALEYE

Professor Samuel Babafemi Olaleye was born in Ibadan, Oyo State and was educated at Omolewa Nursery/Primary Institution (1971-1979) Ibadan Grammar School, Ibadan (1979 - 1982) and Moremi High School, University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) Ile-Ife (1982-1985). He is an alumnus of the Department of Physiology, University of Ibadan, having obtained his B.Sc., M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in 1990, 1992 and 1999 respectively.

As a postgraduate student at the University of Ibadan, he was a recipient of many scholarships, including the Federal Government Postgraduate Scholarship (1991), Oyo State Government Scholarship (1992) and was the first recipient of the M.K.O. Abiola Postgraduate scholarship in 1992.

He joined the services of the University of Ibadan in 1996 as a Lecturer Grade II having previously taught at the Universities of Maiduguri (1992-1995) and Ilorin (1995 - 1996). He was promoted Lecturer I in 1999, Senior Lecturer in 2002, Reader in 2007 and Professor in 2012.

Through a McArthur Foundation Fellowship, he had a post-doctoral experience at the University of Hong Kong and Baptist University, Hong Kong. He headed the Physiology Department at The Kampala International University, Uganda between 2014 and 2015. He was a W.H.O consultant at the Department of Physiology, College of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences, University of Sierra Leone, Freetown (2017 – 2018). He has also been involved in medical education visits and trainings in Kenya, Botswana, Mozambique, Uganda, Ethiopia and South Africa.

A consultant to many Scientific Journals in Nigeria and abroad, Prof. S.B. Olaleye is a co-founder and editor of the African Journal of Biomedical Research (2016 - 2024). He is the Editor-in-Chief of the Nigerian Journal of Physiological Sciences (2019 to date) and Editor, Archives of Basic and Applied Medicine. He is the current President of the African Society for Drosophila Research. He was Dean, Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, College of Medicine, University of Ibadan between 2018 and 2022. He was inducted Fellow of the Physiological Society of Nigeria in February 2023. Until his election as Deputy Provost, Prof S.B. Olaleye was Head, Department of Physiology, College of Medicine, University of Ibadan.

The major forte of Prof. Olaleye’s research activities has been in the area of dietary and environmental factors in gastrointestinal inflammation and secretion. He explores the roles of diets, natural products and environmental toxicants such as lead, cadmium, chromium and arsenite in the pathogenesis of ulcers in the gastrointestinal tract. He has also worked on the relationship between the thyroid gland and adrenergic receptor responses in the gastrointestinal tract. Through these research efforts, it has been observed that beta adrenergic receptor functions in the gut are reduced in hypothyroid conditions. His current research centres on the role of trace elements in gastrointestinal tract function as well as the efficacy of natural products in pain and ulcer treatments.
He presented the 516th Inaugural lecture of the University of Ibadan with the title WINDS AGAINST THE HOWLLOW: LESSONS FROM THE SENTINEL on Thursday 16th February, 2023.

The Revd. Canon Olaleye is a priest of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican communion) having been ordained as an Anglican Priest at the December 2004 advent ordination at All Souls Church, Bodija Ibadan. He is married to Mrs Abigail C. Olaleye, an Assistant Director of Nursing at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan and they are blessed with children.

Professor S.B. Olaleye was elected to become the 12th Deputy Provost of the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan, Ibadan, Nigeria with effect from 01 August, 2024.
