b)   IN PROGRESS

  •    Analysis of ECG results of Adult patients presenting for surgery at the UCH, Ibadan

This study commenced in October 2009. The data collection is on-going. At the conclusion of this study, we should be able to come up with the common ECG changes seen in adult patients presenting for surgery in our institution and also determine the peri-operative usefulness of the preoperative ECG.

  •     Nosocomial infections in the ICU

This is a joint work between Anaesthetists and Microbiologists, which commenced about 12months ago. Following approval of the study proposal by the ethical committee, the study is on-going. The outcome of this study will reveal common organisms which colonise/infect ICU patients, procedures that encourage such and how nosocomial infections can be well controlled in our ICU.

  •    Admission refusal in the intensive care unit

We hope to determine the predictors and outcome of admission refusal in the ICU of the University College Hospital, Ibadan. Also, we want to determine how this has contributed to the mortality in the refused group.

  •    Determinants of length of stay in the ICU after brain tumour surgery

Anecdotal evidence shows that the demand for ICU beds by neurosurgical patients is as high as 60%  in our centre. However, the intensive care personnel and resources have not proportionately increased with the demand. What may help to solve this problem is identifying those factors involved in prolonging the length of stay in ICU. This study is a joint work between the anaesthetists and the neurosurgeons. The proposal is about to be submitted to the ethical committee.

  •    Clinical determinants of outcome in head-injured patients admitted into the ICU

Head injury is one of the leading causes of traumatic death in our country. The identification of reliable indicators of outcome after head injury is critical to appropriate counselling of family members and the use of resources. The purpose of this study is to determine which of a comprehensive set of prospectively collected variables, available soon after injury, will be predictive of mortality in a uniform population of patients with head injury. Logistic regression analysis will be used to ensure that variables found to be associated with mortality are statistically independent. This study is a joint work between the anaesthetists and the neurosurgeons. The proposal is about to be submitted to the ethical committee.
