Professor Funmilayo Adeniyi Okanlawon: An Exceptional Profile in Nursing Education and Practice

Professor Funmilayo Adeniyi Okanlawon hails from Ago-Amodu, headquarters of Saki-East Local Government Area, Oyo State. He is a General Nurse Practitioner, Registered Nurse Educator, and Professor of Community Health Nursing at the University of Ibadan. He holds a Jerusalem Pilgrimage (JP) too. He had his basic general nursing training at the School of Nursing, Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex, Ile-Ife between 1977 and 1979. He obtained his BSc. Nursing Degree (Education), from the University of Ibadan in 1985, his MSc. Nursing Degree in 1993, (the first and the only candidate to start Masters in Nursing at the University of Ibadan between 1991 and 1993). He obtained his PhD Nursing Degree in 2006 at the University of Ibadan. He is a Fellow of the West African College of Nursing (FWACN). He also attended the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, USA, between 2005 and 2006 for a Summer Nursing Research Institute Fellowship (FSNRI).

He joined the Department of Nursing as an Assistant Lecturer in 1994. He was promoted to Lecturer II in 1998, Lecturer I in 2001, and Senior Lecturer in 2007 after obtaining his PhD in 2006. He became a Reader in 2012 and a full Professor in 2016.

Professor Okanlawon has several years of Clinical and Teaching Experience in various Institutions within and Outside Nigeria. He has worked in different positions both within and outside the University, including; a member of the University senate for several years, Assistant Hall Warden (Independence Hall) for 4 years, Acting Head of the Nursing Department from 2012-2014, Postgraduate Coordinator in 2008-2010, Junior staff Disciplinary Committee, Senior staff Panel K Disciplinary Committee, University Board of survey 2006-2014, Appointment and Promotion Committees for Academic and non-academic staff, Visiting Lecturer to many Universities within and outside Nigeria including South Africa, Ghana and Canada. External Assessor to many Universities for Professorial cadres.

Professor Okanlawon belongs to many learned and Professional Organizations. He was a pioneer member of the Governing Council, the African Forum for Research and Education in Health (AFREhealth), an Interprofessional Organization for the African Region responsible for promoting research and health service delivery in Africa. He is currently a Co-Investigator for Strengthening Interprofessional Education in Nigeria and Africa for HIV Care (STRIPE HIV Care), an Interprofessional Organization concerned with optimized team-based care to achieve high-quality HIV Care. He has several professional and International Academic Awards. He is an Emeritus Commandant of the Nigerian Red Cross Society, University of Ibadan.

Professor Okanlawon has supervised and graduated 12 PhD candidates, over 40 Msc. Candidates and hundreds of undergraduate candidates within and outside Nigeria. He has over 80 publications besides hundreds of research papers presented at national and international conferences and workshops.
