IN PROGRESS
i. Tobacco Consumption and Household Socio-economic Welfare in Nigeria – 2013 - Date Story so far: Tobacco consumption precipitates diseases and impacts the overall socio-economic welfare of smoking households. Smoking presents an extremely high risk of premature death compared to other risk behaviour. It is expected that more than 50% of long term smokers will likely eventually die in their productive middle-age as a result of the damages done by the hazardous chemicals in tobacco. The aim of this study is to assess the effect of tobacco consumption on other social goods that enhances the welfare of households in Nigeria. Role/Sponsorship: Principal Investigator/Self-sponsored |
ii. Cost analysis of selected tobacco-related illnesses in Tertiary and Secondary Hospitals in Ibadan, South-West, Nigeria 2017-Date Story so far: Tobacco consumption contributes to the diagnostic conditions associated to morbidities and deaths globally. As such, there is a growing need to prevent the increase in smoking prevalence and ensure that tobacco use does not further exacerbate the already huge burden of non-communicable disease (NCD) in Nigeria. Evidence-based costs studies will provide justifiable reasons for tobacco control spending by the governments. Therefore, this study estimates the cost of managing selected tobacco-related diseases and ascertain its impacts on health outcomes as well as its effect on the welfare of patients’ households. Role/Sponsorship: Principal Investigator/Self-sponsored

iii. The patient perspective economic burden of cardiovascular diseases in sub-Saharan Africa: An application to a large hospital in South-West, Nigeria 2018-Date Story so far: Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) impose enormous and growing economic costs in developing countries. Research has shown that this condition affect low-and middle-income countries (LMICs) about ten to fifteen years earlier compared to developed countries and there is increased concern that this could lead to reduction in the productive/working age population in LMICs with serious implications on the economies of these countries. Despite the multi-faceted economic impact of CVD, few studies have been conducted in SSA to estimate the extent of the problem. This study systematically reviews studies that estimated the economic burden of CVD in SSA. Using data from a large tertiary hospital in a SSA country, Nigeria, this study assesses patient level welfare impact of due to CVD. Role/Sponsorship: Principal Investigator/CARTA Fellowship
