IN PROGRESS
2014 to date: Improving greywater quality and harnessing water resources through algae-based technology in a low to middle income community in South-Western Nigeria. This is an ongoing study that started in year 2014. It was designed to investigate the challenges of greywater disposal in communities and find community-based strategies to manage greywater with benefits of resource recovery, and improved health of the populations. In Nigeria, many households exist without sanitary facilities. Consequently, households allow their greywater to flow into the surroundings without adequate treatment. This is especially so in low-income communities. These practices present potential risks to public health, local economy and living conditions. In order to improve sanitation conditions of the city, a proper greywater management is required. Greywater treatment with the use of algal biomass at the community level would not only reduce water-related infections but also contribute to clean environment. In addition, harvested algae biomass could be converted to useful resources such as biodiesel, animal feedstock, fertilizers and biogas. Role: Principal Investigator |
