 Biography:

Olubukola Adebisi OLALEYE, graduated with a Bachelor of Science (Hons) degree in Physiotherapy from the prestigious University of Ibadan in February, 1998 as the best graduating female student, receiving two awards namely: Tinuke Oshinubi Prize in Physiotherapy and Ajike Ajao Prize in Physiotherapy on graduation. She later returned to her alma mater, the Department of Physiotherapy, University of Ibadan where she obtained her M.Sc and Ph.D degrees in Neuro-physiotherapy in October, 2003 and December, 2011 respectively, thus becoming one of the very few Nigerian women with a doctorate degree in the field of neurological physiotherapy.

Olubukola Commenced her clinical practice at the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital, Sagamu, Ogun State in 2000. She joined the services of the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan in 2001, and rose through the ranks in clinical physiotherapy to become a Chief Physiotherapist before she took up appointment as a Lecturer II in the Department of Physiotherapy, University of Ibadan in 2012. As an experienced clinician, she was appointed a Specialist Adviser (Honourary Consultant) in Neuro-physiotherapy by the Board of UCH Ibadan in January, 2016. She is a foundation Fellow of the Postgraduate Physiotherapy College.

Olubukola is an altruistic clinician, a fascinating teacher, a productive researcher with publications in peer review journals locally and internationally, and a budding administrator. She has served the Department of physiotherapy, the Faculty of Clinical Sciences and indeed the University of Ibadan in many administrative capacities. Some of the positions of responsibilities she has held in her Department include: Departmental Coordinator of Clinical training, Undergraduate Coordinator, and Postgraduate Coordinator. She was a two-term Sub-Dean, Undergraduate (Nursing & Physiotherapy) and a Congregation representative on the Senate of the University of Ibadan. She is currently the Head, Pedagogy Sub-unit of the College Medical Education Unit and the seating, and first female Chairperson of the Nigeria Society of Physiotherapy, Oyo State Chapter.

Area of Specialization

Most of my research focuses on how to improve the quality of care, and care experiences for patients with neurological conditions. My earlier research was on how to integrate physiotherapy into Primary Health Care systems in Nigeria in order to improving access for patients with neurological conditions. More importantly, I have explored the level of satisfaction with physiotherapy services among various groups of patients with neurological conditions and their informal caregivers. I am looking at ways to make care more patient-centred. My recent and ongoing research focuses on components of patient-centred care. I conducted a study to identify the rehabilitation needs of patients with neurological conditions which I intend to expand upon by conducting a participatory research project to explore the needs of people with disabilities in the community.  The desire to involve and engage patients on what they consider important to them in healthcare service delivery is at the heart of my research. This is what makes my work important to me, empowering patients, who are frequently disenfranchised due to their health conditions.
