1. Title: Genetic testing for accurate diabetes differentiation in Nigeria
Funder: Fogarty/National Institute of Health, USA
Brief Summary: Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as diabetes have devastating consequences on African nations such as Nigeria. Most low-resource countries including in Africa are yet to benefit from the fruits of advancement in molecular genetics. Limited access to genetic testing hinders accurate diagnosis of the various forms of diabetes especially maturity onset diabetes of the young (MODY) with consequent mistreatment in Nigeria. Through the application of genetic testing in the clinic, this study is expected to determine for the first time the frequency and genotype variants of MODY in Nigeria as a prototype for other NCDs.
Role: Principal Investigator
Collaborators: Professors: LI Philipson, A. Ogunniyi, Kovler Diabetes Centre, USA
