BIOGRAPHY OF PROFESSOR BUKOLA FOLASADE ADEYEMI
Professor Bukola Folasade Adeyemi was born in Lagos Island, Lagos State to the family of Mr. Isaac Akinbobola and Mrs. Juliana Arinola Ogundipe nee Agboolabori) from Ondo, Ondo State, she started her education at the Onward Nursery School Lawanson, Surulere, Lagos State. She proceeded to Ideal Girls’ Primary School, Falolu, Surulere, Lagos State obtained the Primary School leaving Certificate. She attended St. Louis Secondary School, Ondo, Ondo State from 1979-1984 and Queen’s College Yaba, Lagos, Lagos State from 1984-186, for GCE Ordinary Level and GCE Advanced Level, respectively. Professor Adeyemi graduated from the prestigious University of Ibadan with the Bachelor of Dental Surgery, in 1992, she became a Fellow of the African College of Surgeons in April 2005, in 2006 she was awarded the Master of Science Degree in Epidemiology and Medical Statistics (Ib.).
She joined the Department of Oral Pathology as a Lecturer I in September 2005, she was promoted to the grade of Senior Lecturer in 2011, Reader in 2015 and Professor in 2018. She has served in various capacities at the University, Acting Sub-Dean Postgraduate, Acting Head of Department 2013-2014; 2014-2016 and Head of Department 2020-to date. Prof Adeyemi is the first substantive Head of Oral Pathology Department and the first female Professor of Oral Pathology in Nigeria and West Africa.
Professor Adeyemi has served as an External Examiner at the Faculty of Dentistry, College of Medicine, University of Lagos, Lagos State, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State and Lagos State University. She served as a member of National Universities Commission for Resource Verification at the Hillside University of Science and Technology, Oke-Mesi, Ekiti State, Nigeria; Member of the West African College of Surgeon’s accreditation team to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Lagos State and Federal Medical Centre Gombe, Gombe State, Nigeria. She is an Honorary Consultant to the University College Hospital, Ibadan, Oyo State.
This distinguished oral pathologist has a great passion for transferring the knowledge of oral pathology to undergraduate and postgraduate students, has supervised both MSc projects and dissertations for the award of the fellowship of the WACS and NPCM, has supervised 15 MSc projects and dissertation presented to the West African College of Surgeons & National Postgraduate College of Medicine in partial fulfilment of the award of the fellowship of the colleges. She is a devoted researcher; most of her works are focused on unearthing the risk factors for oral squamous cell carcinoma and understanding the earliest symptoms of the disease with a view to unmasking means of reducing/eradicating the disease in our society. Presently she has over 80 publications in peer-reviewed journals. She is a reviewer of many academic journals such as Indian Journal of Dental Research, National Postgraduate Medical Journal, Annals of Ibadan Postgraduate Medicine, Ghana Dental Journal, West African Journal of Medicine, Nigerian Dental Journal, African Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology/Medicine amongst others.
She is a member of many professional bodies: Nigerian Dental Association (1992-Date); Nigerian Medical Association (1992-Date); West African College of Surgeons (2005-date), International Association for Dental Research (2006-date) Treasurer, Nigerian Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathologist (2009-2014) Treasurer, International Association of Oral Pathologists-African Region (2015-2018).
Bukola Folasade Adeyemi is a Professor of Oral Pathology and Head of Department of Oral Pathology, University of Ibadan, Nigeria. She joined the academic staff of the University of Ibadan on 13th September, 2005 and was promoted the position of Professor in October, 2018. Thus, becoming the first female professor of Oral Pathology in Nigeria and West Africa, as well as the first substantive Head of the Department of Oral Pathology, Faculty of Dentistry University of Ibadan, on the same day.
Professor Adeyemi is a member of Oritamefa Baptist Church, Total Garden Ibadan, Oyo State where she serves as a Sunday School Teacher to young Ladies. She is married to Adewale Samson Adeyemi, a Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology & Provost of College of Health Sciences, Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso, Oyo State. They are blessed with Three lovely children.
