DEPARTMENT OF MENTAL HEALTH/PSYCHIATRY

It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the Department of Mental Health and Psychiatric Nursing, a vibrant and growing unit within the Faculty of Nursing. Officially established in 2024, our department is dedicated to advancing mental health care through excellence in teaching, research, and clinical practice.

Though newly established as a department, our academic journey began decades ago with the Master of Science (M.Sc.) programme in Mental Health and Psychiatric Nursing, which admitted its first candidate as a pioneer. Since then, the programme has expanded significantly, graduating over 10 highly skilled M.Sc. holders who continue to impact mental health services at national and international levels.

In 2020, we launched our Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) programme, aimed at training advanced nurse researchers, educators, and mental health leaders. In addition, the department has proudly contributed to the successful graduation of over 300 Bachelor of Nursing Science (B.N.Sc.) students, in collaboration with other departments.

We are committed to fostering a supportive and intellectually stimulating environment for our students, staff, and collaborators. As you engage with our department—whether as a student, researcher, or partner—you are joining a community passionate about promoting mental well-being and transforming lives through evidence-based nursing practice.

Once again, welcome to the Department of Mental Health and Psychiatric Nursing.

About Us/History of the Department

The Department of Mental Health and Psychiatric Nursing was formally established in 2024 to advance specialized training, research, and practice in the field of mental health within the nursing profession. However, the Master of Science (M.Sc.) programme in Mental Health and Psychiatric Nursing has been in existence for several decades, initially admitting just one (1) candidate. Over the years, the programme has grown in strength and scope, producing more than 10 M.Sc. graduates who have gone on to make meaningful contributions to mental health care, academia, and policy.

In 2020, the department further expanded its academic portfolio by initiating the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) programme, aimed at producing scholars and advanced practitioners equipped for leadership roles in mental health research, teaching, and clinical practice.

Since inception, the specialty has also played a central role in the successful graduation of over 300 Bachelor of Nursing Science (B.N.Sc.) students, in close collaboration with other departments within the Faculty of Nursing. The department continues to serve as a hub of academic excellence and professional development, committed to addressing the growing mental health needs of the population through high-quality education, interdisciplinary collaboration, and evidence-based practice.
