Biography The majority of my research work is in cardiovascular pharmacology from preclinical trials, in animal models using plant extracts to clinical trials and drug utilization concentration of pharmacoepidemiology. We reported the potential toxicity of chlorpheniramine plus chloroquine on respiration during the treatment of malaria in children. Chlorpheniramine was a possible chloroquine resistance reversal agent, but the potential toxicity became a drawback. My epidemiology inquest into disease patterns at the secondary health care facility buttressed the "double disease burden" evident in the developing world. The expenditure on cardiovascular and anti-infective drugs studies in a community pharmacy gave credence to this. Stroke was the leading cause of death highest at 65 years of age and above. The rising trend among females of cardiovascular disease especially hypertension is worrisome. We found that even where hypertension medicines and other medicines are given free, adherence was not optimal until a co-payment option was adopted. Health education and availability of health personnel to interact with patients culminated in improved adherence to medication by patients and an unprecedented level of blood pressure control depicting a “Healthy People”. Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of patients with hypertension and non-hypertensive controls in south-west Nigeria using the WHO-QoL-BREF questionnaire revealed that hypertensive patients had poorer HRQoL compared with the normal individuals, but blood pressure control had no effect on this. We found that the prescription of antihypertensive drugs to patients did not directly translate to an improved health-related quality of life. Further study, showed that hypertensive heart disease was the most common compelling indication. Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors were most frequently prescribed. Hypertensive patients with compelling indications had very poor blood pressure control with a significant positive correlation with the number of antihypertensive drugs.
