- Personal Statement/Research focus
Physical exercise causes some Physiological responses and adaptations in the human body with specific affectation of the cardio-vascular, respiratory and musculoskeletal systems. However, when there is an underlying pathology affecting any of these systems or other functions of the human body, the normal physiological responses to exercise could aggravate the symptoms of the presenting pathology such that the patient may be unable to benefit maximally from therapeutic exercises. In some situations, there is a conflict between the beneficial effect of exercise for health promotion and medical rehabilitation and the risk of exacerbation of the symptoms of some other underlying pathology such as diabetes mellitus, hypertension, sickle cell anemia, bronchial asthma etc. , there is therefore a need for very careful exercise prescription which is mindful of the possible adverse effects of exercise on some prevailing pathologies and also maximize the beneficial effect of therapeutic exercise for health promotion.
My research studies have focused on how the state of health can affect the response and adaptation to exercise, with particular emphasis on some medical conditions for which a patient can be referred for physiotherapy. This has opened up a knowledge base to justify the successful and safe utilization of exercise as a treatment modality in the total management of some disease conditions for which exercise therapy is not being used at all or seldom used for fear of exacerbation of symptoms. My studies are generating further researches which have improved the confidence of Doctors and Physiotherapists for the safe and beneficial utilization of exercise therapy in health and disease conditions.
Specifically, my studies have focused on the physiological principles of therapeutic exercises for preventive, curative, rehabilitative and health promotive purpose in human subjects.
