    (ii)       IN PROGRESS

Computed Tomography (CT) Changes in Dementia

This is a collaboratory  and inter-disciplinary research project between Ibadan (Nigeria)  and Indianapolis (USA) on  Dementia of the elderly. I am involved in radiological aspect of the research aimed at:Documenting the CT appearances in 3 groups of patients-(a) those with dementia (b) patients with cognitive Impairment c) Age-related normal Controls. Assessing the role of CT in the diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease by comparing the ventricular sizes and ventricular brain ratios, in the 3 groups using computerized  tomography.  The CT examination were carried out without a prior knowledge of the clinical diagnosis, the clinical aspect being carried out by co-researcher in the Department of Medicine and Psychiatry.

The Preliminary CT report shows that:

    1. i)     Evaluating ventricular dilation in the dementia patients is higher than in age-related normal patients

ii)The Sylvian, suprasella and prepontine cisterns are more significantly affected than the    lateral  ventricles.

iii) The linear measurements of prepontine cistern also show better correlation with the group of dementia.  iv)There is no correlation between the degrees of cerebral atrophy in the three groups of     patients.

    1. v) While CT examination alone cannot be used to differentiate the various types of dementias, it can be used to identify and follow up patients with high risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease in group of patients with dementia. The preliminary reports have been read at symposiums and meetings.

    2)        Radiological features of Meningiomas in Ibadan

This is one of the commonest brain tumors seen in the department from CT examination. This retrospective study is in progress to elicit the radiological patterns and correlate our findings with surgical and pathological findings. The results will be useful in making more definitive diagnosis on CT examination and document typical radiological appearance and clinical features as seen in Ibadan. This is a joint study with the Neurosurgery unit.

    3)        Hydrocephalus in Ibadan

This radiological pattern of ventricular enlargement in children is being studied using computerized tomography with reference to the cause, site, clinical presentation and outcome of management

    4)        Renal Ultrasonography and Echocardiography in Healthy Nigerian Children - To obtain reference values

This is a collaboratory study with Dr Asinobi and Dr Omokhodion of the department ofPediatrics and it supported by Senate research grant. Dr Asinobi is involved in the clinical examination and recruitment of the subjects, Dr Omokhodion in cardiac measurements while I do the ultrasound examinations to measure the renal sizes and other parameters. So far we have examined about 200 patients.

     (iii)   DISSERTATION AND THESIS

Experience with Lymphography - Approved dissertation submitted to the National

Postgraduate Medical College as part fulfillment of the Fellowship   Award.

A Book of 12 Case Reports illustrating various aspects of Radiology.  Also submitted to the

National Post-graduate Medical College as part fulfillment for Fellowship

    1. A.Ongoing Research Support
      1. Cognitive Function after stroke (COGFAST) Nigeria MRI Study

This is a collaborative prospective study investigating the profile, pattern and predictors of cognitive dysfunction among a cohort of Nigerian Stroke survivors.

It commenced in June 2010 as a collaboration involving researchers in the University of Ibadan/University College Hospital Ibadan (Prof. A Ogunniyi, Prof. A Ogunseyinde, Dr. M. Owolabi, Dr. G. Ogbole and Mr. J. Akinyemi), Federal Medical Centre Abeokuta, (Dr. R. Akinyemi) and the Institute for Ageing and Health, Newcastle University, Newcastle upon Tyne, UK (Prof. R. Kalaria).

The study involves detailed clinical and neuropsychological assessments as well as neuroimaging (MRI) and biochemical evaluation, and follows up of the study subjects. The study was commenced with initial financial support provided by Prof. Raj Kalaria with plans to apply for a definitive grant after the initial pilot phase of the study has generated sufficient useable data.
