Area of Research Focus (Dr. M.A. Okunlola)

My major area of research focus is in the area of Fertility Regulation. Sixteen of the publications directly emanate from this area. i.e (Publications 2, 4, 6, 9, 10, 21, 23, 24, 26, 28, 34, 36, 38, 39, 40, 49). These include studies on Emergency Contraception (publications 2, 10, 28, 34), Hormonal Contraception (Publications 6, 9, 40, 49), Intrauterine Contraceptive Device (Publication 21, 36, 39), Implantable Contraception (Publication 4, 5, 24) and Voluntary Tropical Contraception (Publication 26 and 38).

These papers focus mainly on the acceptability and safety profile of some modern methods of Contraception. The paper on the Female Condom (publication 23) is of particular interest in this area of service delivery as there exists a dearth of publications in the local press on this contemporary topic. This is particularly important considering the potential benefits accruable to the uptake of this method among the adolescents and young adults on which we focus.  Also, the publications on Emergency contraception and Sexuality, Contraceptive choice and AIDS awareness (i.e. publications 2 and 10) proffer practical interventions at increasing the uptake of these modern contraceptive methods among the populace.

The safety profile is the area of concern in seven of the publications in this major area of thrust (i.e. publications 4, 6, 9, 21, 23, 36 and 39), while the relevant aspect of discontinuation patterns as regards the Intrauterine Contraceptive Device and the Sub dermal implant (Norplant) is studied in publication 18 and 24. A high level of Contraceptive discontinuation is a very vital limiting factor to the desired increase in contraceptive use prevalence among the general population. These are important issues in Contemporary Fertility Regulation.
