CONTRIBUTION TO MEDICINE  & SCIENCES

I am one of the collaborators for the World Mental Health Survey Initiative, a project of the Assessment, Classification, and Epidemiology (ACE) Group at the World Health Organization coordinating the implementation and analysis of general population epidemiologic surveys of mental, substance use, and behavioural disorders in countries in all WHO Regions

I am also the principal investigator of a research work aimed by the TFTBT Health Initiatives, aimed at studying drug and alcohol use in the Military population in Nigeria. The study was carried out in a military compound, which accommodates 81 infantry battalions, 42 division engineers, 545 signals regiment and currently houses about 3000 soldiers and their families and was the first study of its kind in Nigeria. The results were startling and were published in international journals.

Another contribution to science is community surveys of alcohol and drug use in open non-roofed bars in Nigeria. This ongoing survey is sponsored by the Board of Trustees of the Endowment Fund for the Promotion of Mental Health and Neurosciences in Nigeria, Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Aro, Abeokuta, Nigeria, of which I am the principal investigator. The lack of effective alcohol and drug policy in Nigeria is a major factor in the amazing rise in alcohol and drug use across all ages in Nigeria.

Dr Lasebikan has just finished writing the first textbook in Nigeria in the area of consultation-liaison psychiatry. The title of the book is “A Textbook of Psychiatry in Medicine”. The 40-chapter book was reviewed by three giants in medicine in the world, Professor O Gureje, Professor Jude Ohaeri and Professor Olusola Ogunniyi. The book will soon be publicly launched.
