Researches

  1. Completed Research
    1. Immunological markers in diagnosis and monitoring of HIV and tuberculosis infection
    2. Antimicrobial peptides (psoriasin) in Nigerian hands and effectiveness of hand washing and drying in infection control
    3. Safety (acute and chronic) profiles and effectiveness of herbal preparation for HIV infection
    4. Role of malaria, anaemia and immune response in paediatric patients
    5. Inflammatory potentials of medicinal plants and their products
  2. Research In Progress
    1. Role of cytokines in HIV progression

HIV monitoring with CD4 count and viral load are associated with problems thus need for less expensive, accessible and reliable methods of determining response to treatment. Selected cytokines produced by CD4 T cells were measured in HIV patients at periodic interval. About 70% of the cytokines have been successfully assayed with CD4 count and viral loads

    1. Chemokine ligands concentration in HIV patients

Susceptibility of individual to HIV infection had been a major concern necessitating R4 and R5 ligands measurements in healthy, discordant and concordant couples. We have successfully determined the concentrations of these chemokine ligands in healthy, concordant and discordant couples however their concentrations at different phases of therapy had not been measured

    1. Role of diagnostic markers in Hepatitis B infection

Specificity and sensitivity had been a challenge in Hepatitis B diagnosis. Conventional liver functions test and antibodies to Hepatitis B surface, envelope and core antigens are to be assayed. Their levels will be compared with viral load. Viral load has not been done awaiting reagents and other logistics

  1. Project, Dissertation and Thesis
    1. Effectiveness of different hand washing and drying agents on hand flora

Are herbal remedies effective in HIV infection in Nigeria?

Research Focus:

My research focus is immunology of infectious diseases. I investigated the role of immunological markers in HIV infection progression and monitoring of herbal therapies. The research led to the safety studies of potential herbal therapy in animal model in acute and chronic phase when used alone or in combination with conventional medicines. Because monitoring of HIV infection are associated with problems, I investigated immunological markers that are potentially effective and less associated with problems. I also investigated the immunological markers that are potentially effective in making diagnosis and monitoring of complicated and un-complicated tuberculosis with drug or non-drug resistance effective. Because hands played major role in infection control, I investigated the presence of antimicrobial peptides in Nigerian residents and determined effectiveness of hand hygiene
