University of Ibadan Clinician-Researcher becomes First Indigenous African Senior Fellow of Worlds Leading MRI Society

Godwin Ogbole is a distinguished professor of Radiology and consultant neuroradiologist at the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan (COMUI)  and University College Hospital (UCH) Ibadan whose pioneering contributions have transformed African neuroimaging and stroke research. He played a key role in assembling Africa’s first ultra-low-field MRI prototype in Uganda in 2022 and has trained or contributed to the training of over 100 MRI scientists and clinicians across the continent. As the lead radiologist for Africa’s largest NIH-funded stroke study (SIREN), he holds a patent for stroke imaging analysis software deployed across 16 West African sites. His research has significantly advanced the understanding of stroke epidemiology, uncovering metabolic, genetic, and sociocultural risk factors unique to individuals of African ancestry. He actively promotes African neuroscience research with over 200 publications and 4000 citations.

He has held several fellowships including at the Harvard Medical School,  University of Oxford and recently at the University of California San Francisco. In 2022, he received the Oxford University "Most Impactful Knowledge Exchange Award." His leadership in the International Society for Magnetic Resonance In Medicine (ISMRM) and the ISMRM African chapter has expanded MRI training in Africa. He collaborates with MR experts in 4 continents, including Australia, Asia and Europe, to develop and improve MRI diagnostics for neurologic conditions in low-resource settings. As the first African member of the Neuroimaging Task Force of the International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE), he has influenced global epilepsy imaging guidelines.

A dedicated mentor, Professor Ogbole is committed to lifelong learning and mentoring African scientists, with the mantra “learn, teach and guide.” His exemplary leadership in radiology education, capacity building, and groundbreaking research continues to enhance neuroimaging in Africa.  His recent conferment on the 11 of May 2026 in Capetown in South Africa with the senior fellow award of the ISMRM is another proud recognitions of this contributions for leading and advocating for clinical deployment of MRI in Africa’s low resource settings by adapting protocols for affordability, safety and accessibility.
