 Biography:

Dr Kolawole Oluseyi Akande graduated from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife in 2002 with MBchB.  He had his postgraduate medical training at the University College Hospital, Ibadan culminating in the award of the fellowship of the West African College of Physicians in Internal Medicine- Gastroenterology. He was awarded 2013 S.F Kuku’s chairman prize for the best fellowship candidate in internal medicine, West African College of Physician and A.F.B Mabadeje prize for the best fellowship dissertation in internal medicine, West African College of Physicians, He was a GI endoscopy fellow at MedIndia Hospital, Chennai in 2010/2011. Dr Akande holds a Master of Science degree in Human Nutrition from the University of Ibadan. He was a project awardee of the University of Ibadan Medical Education Partnership Initiative for Junior staff (an NIH funded mentored research) in 2017/2018. Dr Akande was a visiting fellow at the Institute of Global Health, Northwestern University, Chicago in 2017, and a fellow of the Stroke and cardiovascular Research institute (NIH funded research capacity building) in 2021. Dr Akande has won many travel grants to attend and present abstracts in international and local conferences. He is a senior lecturer in the Department of Medicine with a joint appointment in the infectious Disease Institute. He is also an honorary consultant Gastroenterologist and Hepatologist at the University College Hospital, Ibadan. His research interests include liver health, Hepatitis, Steatotic liver diseases and Hepatocellular carcinoma. He is the Principal Investigator of Ibadan Hepatitis B registry.

1. Title: African Hepatitis B/HIV-HBV Co-infection Clinical Research Network
Funder: Robert J Harvey, MD Institute of Global Health, Northwestern University
Brief Summary: The overall goal of this project is to establish a multisite African HBV and HIV-HBV Co-infection clinical cohort study that will enable cutting-edge research to be conducted to help improve health outcomes and optimize hepatitis care and treatment in some of the highest HIV and HBV prevalence settings and address key research gaps in Hepatitis B (HBV) in SSA and establish the foundations for participation in future CHB therapeutic trials

2. Title: HCV Screening in Pregnant Women in Nigeria using Dried blood spots

Brief Summary: This study will evaluate the HCV seroprevalence among pregnant women in    Nigeria using DBS sampling and subsequent testing with HCV antibody/antigen testing.  The results of this study will enable planning of a pharmacokinetic study of daclatasvir in pregnant women with HCV infection.

4. Title: Stigmatization and Discrimination Against People with Chronic Hepatitis B Virus Infection attending University College Hospital, Ibadan: Real or Imagined?
Brief Summary: cross sectional study of 320 randomly selected patients with CHB infection that uses mixed methods to study the frequency and types of discrimination and stigmatization among patients with CHB infection attending the University College Hospital, Ibadan.
