 Biography:

My area of interest in obstetrics is maternofetal medicine. I have taken an interest in infections that have the potential for vertical transmission e.g., hepatitis B, HIV and also negatively impact pregnancy outcomes e.g., malaria.

In previous research, I have examined the impact of adverse pregnancy outcomes such as fetal macrosomia, anaemia in pregnancy. I was part of the UCH team for the landmark MAGPIE trial which determined the efficacy of magnesium sulphate for preeclampsia / eclampsia. My research activities have also examined contributions to adverse maternal outcome such as maternal knowledge of danger signs, blood transfusion requirements and finally maternal mortality. I have reviewed co-morbidities associated with HIV such as hepatitis B, the cytopaenias associated with the HIV positive mother and pregnancy outcome in the HIV positive pregnant mother e.g. low birth weight and preterm delivery. I have also reviewed the strategies associated with reducing the impact of malaria in pregnancy such as preventive measures (IPT and ITN) and use of antimalarials (artemether lumefantrine, artesunate amodiaquine).

More recently I have been part of the WHO MPD4QED project in Nigeria. In the last 2 years I have served as the regional coordinator for southwest Nigeria. The project has successfully collected data for almost 200, 000 parturients and their babies. It has highlighted gaps in care and the potential for improving the health of our women, infants and children with the prospect for achieving the SDGs.

In addition, I served as the PI-Obstetrics which examined the role of antenatal corticosteroids in the care of early preterm infants in low resource settings. This has resulted in a change in guidelines for antenatal corticosteroids.
