Biography: I was born in Ibadan and had my primary and secondary education in Ibadan. I had my first degree in medicine from Ogun State University (now Olabisi Onabanjo University) in the 80s and finished as the best graduating student of the second set of intakes in 1989. I developed interest in Paediatrics during my housemanship at the Ogun State University Teaching Hospital, Sagamu seeing the way the resident doctors and Consultants handled children and brought smiles to the faces of families. It was particularly motivating to see the Paediatricians look at children from a distance and tell who was sick or not sick even before touching and they were usually right. After my national youth service at the Nigerian Defence Academy, Kaduna, I returned to commence residency training in Paediatrics at the Ogun State University Teaching Hospital, Sagamu. Thereafter, I transferred to the University College Hospital, Ibadan for my residency training in Paediatrics in the search for excellence in my chosen field. My interest in neonatology developed while in Sagamu with the way my consultants paid attention to details and was often very rewarding. While doing my residency training in UCH, the interest in neonatology was further rekindled. After my residency training in Ibadan, I joined as academic staff of the College of Medicine as a lecturer in Neonatology in the year 2000 and subsequently Honorary Consultant in Neonatology at the University College Hospital, Ibadan till date. In addition to my teaching responsibilities in the University, I also serve as national trainer in Neonatal Resuscitation, Essential Newborn Care, Comprehensive Newborn Care and Kangaroo Mother care. I have been active in my professional associations and held posts as the Vice President (2018 - 2021) and President (2021 - 2023) of the Nigerian Society of Neonatal Medicine. I have been the National Coordinator of the Neonatal Resuscitation Training programme of the Paediatric Association of Nigeria from 2018 till date. |
