Research

Completed

1. Trends in Burn Epidemiology in a Nigerian Hospital.-  A manuscript of this work has been submitted for publication

2. Use of surgical simulation in medical student training and evaluation - There are two parts to this work.

The first is a study evaluating the use of a model of a subcutaneous lump that I personally designed for training medical students and using the model for evaluating their knowledge at examination. It has been used by over 100 participants and the report is being written.

A simulator model for another completely different surgical lesion have been designed based on analysis of previous results and have been used successfully for medical students evaluation. My colleagues and I have obtained a patent of this device.

In Progress

1. Collaborative Study on Genetic Analysis of Human Disorders: Keloids Formation. - This study was premised on the high prevalence of keloids in Yoruba tribe and the challenges associated with current modalities of management. The aim was to localize a gene that confer susceptibility to keloid formation. So far, we have recruited patients from large Yoruba families with keloids and DNA have been extracted from samples taken from them.

Two papers, one based on the process of recruitment and a second reporting the identification of susceptibility gene for familial keloids have been published in high impact international journals. Further analysis is still on-going on the extracts.

2. Evaluation of reliability of Levine swab for microbiological studies in wounds. - The objective of the study is to compare the reliability of Levine method of wound swabbing with that of wound biopsy (Gold Standard) in the identification of microorganisms causing wound infection. Recruited patients are requested to complete a proforma. Wound swab and wound biopsy specimens are taken from the patients and subjected to microbiological analysis.

We have recruited about thirty five participants and analysed their specimens. A paper based on preliminary findings have been published. The preliminary findings have led to improvement in the design of the study and this improved design is currently being utilized. Analysis of some results is ongoing

3. Impact of Flap Transfer and Microsurgery Course on Specialist surgical training - My colleagues and I are carrying our a survey of participants at biennial Flap Transfer and Microsurgery Course in order to determine the impact of the course on their practice over the years. The responses received are being evaluated. Preliminary result of this survey was presented at the congress of the American College of Surgeons that held in Boston, Massachusetts in October 2023
