The meeting commenced with congratulations to the Provost, Professor T.O. Ogundiran (FAS), who was recognized for all his significant past contributions to the Ibadan College of Medicine in his various previous roles.
ICOMAA-NA President, Dr. Modupe Sokunbi introduced herself and emphasized the shared vision between the college and its alumni, focusing on teamwork and support for students and faculty. Key initiatives were discussed, including the Student Hostel Project and the Global Sponsor a Student Project.
Dr. Dolamu Sokunbi, a former president of ICOMAA-NA, highlighted the establishment of an endowment fund aimed at securing engagement and contributions from alumni who prefer to give back through contributions to long term investment funds to provide continuous investment earnings and long term support to the College. He emphasized that this fund was not to take away from contributions for immediate needs of the College but another way to allow all alumni give back in all the various ways most appealng to them.
Key members of the executive committeee including Tony Anani, the general secretary, shared their backgrounds and commitment to the college's future. Dr. Adeyinka Williams Akinboboye expressed confidence in the Provost and assured him of the support of ICOMAA-NA. Vice-President Tunji Akintilo expressed confidence in the College administration and pledged enthusiasm and continuous positive engagement from ICOMAA-NA. Financial Secretary, Dr Ajala Adeolu raised the issue of utilizing alumni across the world as Adjunct Faculty in efforts to further support the teaching and research activities at the College.
The executive committee expressed gratitude for the strong foundations laid by their predecessors and the significant accomplishments achieved during those previous tenures. They promised to build on past achievements in recognition of the vital role of ICOMAA-NA in supporting the college.
The Provost called for all to introduce innovative ideas to sustain the college's esteemed reputation in Nigeria and pledged to continue the collaborative spirit existing among the College and alumni groups.
The Provost expressed his great appreciation for all that ICOMAA-NA has been doing in support of the College and the University College Hospital. He asked the executive committee to convey his deep appreciation and warmest regards to every single member of ICOMAA-NA.
The meeting also addressed the significant staffing challenges within the College of Medicine, noting the retirement of senior faculty members without adequate replacements. The provost addressed plans to utilize retired professionals and diaspora members as adjunct lecturers to enhance the educational experience. Additionally, the importance of extra-curricular activities including various ways of community service was emphasized as a means for broadening the overall student experience and encouraging students to remain relevant beyond the classroom.
The meeting concluded with strong expressions of support for Professor Ogundiran, with the executive committee reaffirming their commitment to providing every assistance and support him and the College during his term of office.
The overall atmosphere was one of encouragement and optimism, highlighting a collective dedication to the College’s bright future and the well-being of all its students and alumni.
