Research Support

1.    Diabetes care in Sub-Sahara Africa: The Diabcare Middle Africa Study. Novo Nordisk Diabcare Research Grant

In this Nigerian multicenter study, it was found that diabetes care is still poor, even in tertiary centers across the country. The use of insulin was found to be suboptimal, when used and the initiation of insulin therapy was unduly delayed until the appearance of nonreversible complications.

2.    Metabolic and cognitive functions of Nigerian patients with Diabetes and the Metabolic Syndrome. MacArthur Reseach Grant for the study of cognitive functions in patients with Diabetes.

In this study, it was found that leptin, the anorexigenic hormone levels are diminished in patients with diabetes and obesity. Cognitive function is also impaired; the level of impairment is proportional to duration of diabetes and to the level of some antioxidants in the patients.
