Basic Information
Biography:
Bukola F. Adeyemi (née Ogundipe) B.D.S (Ibadan), M.Sc.(Med. Stat. Epid.) FWACP (Oral Pathology)
Professor Bukola F. Adeyemi graduated with Bachelor of Dental Surgery from the University of Ibadan in 1992. She had residency training in Oral Pathology at the University College Hospital, Ibadan, Nigeria; she obtained Fellowship of the West African College of Surgeons in Oral Pathology in 2005. She obtained Masters in Medical statistics and Epidemiology, from the University of Ibadan, in 2006. She joined the faculty of Dentistry the University of Ibadan in 2005 and was promoted to the grade of professor on October 1, 2018. She is amember of several professional associations and also serves as reviewer for both local and international journals. I have collaboratively published over 75 articles in peer-reviewed local and international journals.
Area of Specialization
Over 60% of Professor Adeyemi’s publications are in the field of neoplastic pathologies of the head and neck, with a bias for oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). From these studies differences in the epidemiology of OSCC in our environment and those from more developed nations was established. Worldwide, OSCC is strongly associated with chronic exposure to cigarette and alcohol; observed in over 85% of patients, while only 26.1% of our patients gave positive history of exposure. Interestingly, exposure to alcohol alone was found to be protective of OSCC. The tongue is the most frequently affected site in most parts of the world, while the gingiva was the site of greatest predilection in our patients. In addition, less than 45% oral malignancies were OSCC compared to the over 90% worldwide. A slight male preponderance of 1.2 was noted. Pain from a non-mobile, non-carious tooth was the most common symptom of OSCC at onset of disease in our patients and should raise the index of suspicion for an intraosseous malignancy. Since chronic exposure to cigarette and alcohol was not common in our patients, the possibility of viral etiology was explored by assessing human papilloma viral (HPV) protein in OSCC tissue from our patients. HPV was found to be of no aetiologic importance in OSCC in our patients.
