 CURRENT RESEARCH

1. Title: School water, sanitation, and hygiene financing in developing countries: A case study of Ibadan Metropolis, Nigeria
Funder: ½ West Africa-Michigan CHARTER in GEOHealth with funding from NIH/FIC and IDRC grants
Brief Summary: Inadequate access to essential school water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) facilities in developing countries like Nigeria has been reported to significantly limit the possibility of achieving global targets associated with sustainable development goals three and six by 2030. Recent literature has persistently associated school WASH inadequacy with a high prevalence of poor WASH practices and attitudes among school children in Nigeria. This, in turn, results in school absenteeism, physical, mental, and social health challenges, sexual assault, increased incidences of school drop-out. This study seeks to assess the financial implications of providing basic school water, sanitation, and hygiene services to each student with the hope of coming up with a possible framework that can be developed to address the current gaps in school WASH funding. This may also enhance the ability of the related Government agencies, NGOs, Civil society, PTA, private organizations and other stakeholders to be active solution providers.

2. Title: Spatial and temporal variations of river water quality parameters and effect on irrigated food crops and soil in Ido LGA of Ibadan metropolis
Funder: ½ West Africa-Michigan CHARTER in GEOHealth with funding from NIH/FIC paired grant and IDRC
Brief Summary:  Irrigation agriculture has not been fully developed in the Southwest of Nigeria. During the dry seasons, many farmers resort to using polluted surface water and wastewater from industries and households thus exposing both farmers and consumers of products to health challenges. Documentation is scarce on the interplay between quality of irrigation water, irrigated crops and health risk faced by both farmers and consumers of irrigated crops. This study therefore assessed the variations of river water quality parameters its effect on irrigated food crops and soil using Ido local government as a case study.
Role: Co- investigator
Collaborators: Julius Fobil, M.K.C.  Sridhar, Babatunde Dosumu, Mumini Adejumo

3. Title: Comparative assessment of household water treatment and safe storage options for low-income communities in Ibadan.
Funder: ½ West Africa-Michigan CHARTER in GEOHealth with funding from NIH/FIC paired grant and IDRC
Brief Summary: Access to potable sources of water for drinking and other domestic purposes is still a mirage to a large proportion of low-income earners in Nigeria. This is a follow-up to an initial assessment carried out in selected communities in Ibadan. Activities carried out showed that the quality of drinking water deteriorated in the household during storage. A pilot study carried out showed an improvement in drinking water stored in special storage containers, albeit with some coliforms. This study will assess the efficiency of simple, affordable household water treatment methods such as ceramic filter, point of use water filter/purifier and activated carbon filter in removing coliform /E. coli removal
Role: Principal Investigator
