Biography:

Professor E. Oluwabunmi Olapade-Olaopa is an accomplished broad-based scholar, medical educator, change facilitator, visionary, and a new generation leader. With nearly 38 years of experience, his academic career has traversed three continents, the highlight of which was his elevation to a full professorship in Surgery at the University of Ibadan in 2007. His dedication to education is evident in his role as a teacher, trainer, supervisor, and mentor to numerous students, residents, and junior faculty. Additionally, he has organised several capacity-building courses, both locally and internationally, showcasing his commitment to the holistic development of medical professionals.

Oluwabunmi's research activities span the basic, clinical, and epidemiological aspects of surgical and urological diseases, as well as medical education and health systems. His contributions to science include over 150 publications, including book chapters, books, and papers in major scientific journals, with almost 2000 citations. His ability to secure grants for research, educational, and capacity-building activities underscores his impact on advancing medical knowledge. Additionally, he has registered a patent and serves on the editorial boards of several national and international science journals.

Professor Olapade-Olaopa was elected as the Provost of the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan, from September 9, 2016, to July 31, 2020. In this position, he demonstrated exemplary leadership and a deep understanding of the intricacies of academic administration. Major achievements during his tenure include improving the world ranking of the Medical School from 10th to 1st position in Sub-Saharan Africa (excluding South Africa), and the establishment of a Clinical Virology Laboratory in 2020, which was the seventh laboratory to be accredited nationally for diagnostic testing during the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Professor Olapade-Olaopa plays key roles in the international medical community, showcasing his leadership and influence internationally. Serving as the Membership and International Relations Representative for Africa and the Middle East on the Board of Directors of the Societe Internationale d’Urologie from 2018 to 2023, and as President of the Association of Medical Schools in Africa and a member of the Executive Committee of the World Federation for Medical Education since 2018, he has been a key figure in shaping medical and surgical education and training standards worldwide. Additionally, his involvement in the West African College of Surgeons and Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canda underscores his impact on surgical practices and medical education globally.

The provision of effective and affordable healthcare at the community level is one of Professor Olapade-Olaopa’s passion. In this vein, he has chaired the Board of Management of the Nathaniel O. Idowu Comprehensive Health Care Centres at Eniosa and Sagbe villages in the Lagelu Local Government Area of Oyo Sate since 2016.

Accolades and recognition have followed Oluwabunmi throughout his career, with prizes, awards, distinctions, and honours from various institutions. He played a pivotal role in the National Undergraduate Medical and Dental Curriculum template of 2012 and the NUCs 2022 Core Curriculum Minimum Academic Standard. He continues to shape the landscape of medical education and practice globally, earning the respect of peers and the gratitude of the communities he serves.
