Brief Biography

Dr Folasade Adenike Bello earned her MBBS degree from the University of Ibadan in 1999. She won the Abebe Prize in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. Her commenced residency training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University College Hospital, Ibadan in 2001 and earned fellowships from the West African College of Surgeons and National Postgraduate College of Nigeria in April and May 2006, respectively. She was employed as faculty in the University of Ibadan with a joint honorary appointment as an honorary consultant at the University College Hospital in September 2006. She obtained a Master of Health Science in Population and Reproductive Health in 2008. Dr Folasade Adenike Bello earned her MBBS degree from the University of Ibadan in 1999. In February 2019, she became a Joint Steering Committee member in the College of Medicine’s collaboration with London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (COMUI-LSHTM), alongside LSHTM’s Clinical Trial’s Unit Director. She is the Collaboration’s co-Director and National Coordinator of the Nigerian Coordinating Centre. The current on-going project is the WOMAN-2 trial, of which she is the National Clinical Lead over four study sites in Nigeria. She also sits on NAFDAC’s Clinical Trial Advisory Committee.
Dr Bello served two terms as the Assistant Hall Warden, then two terms as the Hall Warden of Alexander Brown Hall. She is also the Staff Advisor of Action Group on Adolescent Health (AGAH), a students’ advocacy group, from 2011 till date.

Area of Specialization
Dr Bello’s initial research was in feto-maternal medicine, and more than half of her 82 publications were focused in this area. Her evolving research interest is infertility and reproductive endocrinology. She has evaluated the surgical appear of endometriosis in a local population, perception to assisted reproductive techniques, and several aspects of abortion and post abortion care. Tubal infection is a major cause of infertility in Nigerian clients, which inspired her to study the relationship of Chlamydial infection with sperm parameters in men, and with oxidative stress markers and reproductive hormones in women. Her current research is assessing the phenotypes of polycystic ovarian syndrome in our local populations and describing the hormonal regulatory control of multiple ovarian waves during the human menstrual cycle.

Current Research and Capacity Building Projects including Grants

1. Tranexamic acid for reducing postpartum bleeding in women with anaemia: an international, randomised, double-blind, placebo controlled trial (WOMAN-2 trial) (ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT03475342) Wellcome Trust and Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Tranexamic acid (TXA) has been established as an effective treatment for post-partum haemorrhage (PPH), when used within three hours of delivery. This is a multi-centre, multi-country clinical trial that aims to assess the prophylactic use of tranexamic acid for PPH in anaemic women (who are susceptible to blood loss). All women admitted into labour ward for vaginal delivery at the study sites are screened with a hand-held haemoglobin reader (Hemocue). Women with haemoglobin ≤9.5 mg/dL are recruited and given the trial treatment (TXA or placebo) immediately after delivery. Blood loss is measured clinically, follow-up haemoglobin measurements are taken, and a walk test and other parameters to assess anaemia are carried out. Nigeria has four study sites at present and three more sites are being assessed for suitability. I oversee the study at all the Nigerian centres. National coordinating investigator. Professors Haleema Shakur-Still & Ian Roberts, Clinical Trial Unit, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

2. Physiologic Mechanisms Underlying Ovarian Follicular Waves During the Menstrual Cycle (ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT05531357). Royal Hospital University Foundation and MITACS. Fifty healthy women of reproductive age have transvaginal ultrasound scans performed every day of an interovulatory interval to assess follicle counts and diameters. They also have daily finger-prick blood and urine samples to assess pituitary and ovarian reproductive hormones. These are aimed to investigate the multiple ovarian follicle wave theory and to assess the hormonal regulation of the wave phenomenon. It is expected to have clinical applications in assisted conception and hormonal contraception. Co-investigator. Dr Angela Baerwald, University of Saskatchewan.

3. Epidemiologic and Biochemical Profile of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome in an African Population.  TETFund. There is paucity of data on polycystic ovarian phenotypes in the study environment. The study aimed to evaluate anthropometric and biochemical associations with polycystic ovarian morphology identified on transvaginal ultrasound scans. One hundred and forty patients were recruited from gynaecology clinic. Information was obtained on clinical hyperandrogenism and menstrual irregularity to diagnose polycystic ovarian syndrome. Anthropometric measurements were body mass index and waist: hip ratio. Hormonal assays carried out were FSH, LH, AMH, estradiol, fasting glucose, testosterone and sex hormone binding protein. Principal investigator. Ogunbode OO, Morhason-Bello IO, Obajimi OO, Kuti MA.
