    TEACHING

Lectures to undergraduate medical students
My participation in teaching dates back to August 2000 when I was appointed as an Associate Lecturer in the Department of Paediatrics. As an Associate Lecturer in Paediatrics, I gave didactic lectures to undergraduate medical students on the following topics:

  1. Diabetes mellitus in childhood
  2. Accidents and poisoning

Since my appointment as Lecturer I in Paediatrics, I have given regular core lectures to undergraduate medical students covering the following topics in different aspects of paediatric neurology:

  1. Development and developmental disorders
  2. Cerebral Palsy
  3. Seizures in childhood
  4. Meningitis
  5. Diseases of the anterior horn cell
  6. Neuropathies
  7. Muscular Dystrophies
  8. Myasthenia gravis

During my 3months Fellowship on e-learning at the Clinical School, Swansea University, Wales, United Kingdom, I had the opportunity to learn new methods in Medical Education which have greatly enhanced my teaching skills.

Seminars
I take turns with other lecturers in the Department in presiding over social paediatric seminars which focus on the relationships between socio-economic and environmental factors and childhood diseases.

Postgraduate teaching
I am currently the Head of the paediatric neurology unit of the hospital and the most senior Consultant Paediatric Neurologist in the hospital. I take turns with other lecturers in the department of Paediatrics to give lectures to postgraduate resident doctors in the field of paediatric neurology. I also on a weekly basis, give teachings on EEG techniques and evaluations to resident doctors rotating through paediatric neurology. I give didactic lectures to resident doctors at courses organized by the West African Postgraduate Medical College in the Departments of Paediatrics and Family Medicine.

I pioneered the work on transcranial Doppler (TCD) ultrasonography in children with sickle cell disease in Nigerian. Being the first specialist to acquire this skill for TCD studies in the country, I have trained 6 doctors, 3 at the National Sickle Cell Centre, Lagos, Nigeria and 3 at the University College Hospital Nigeria on the techniques of TCD ultrasonography. The transfer of this skill has given a boost to the efforts geared towards the primary prevention of stroke in children with SCD in the country.

Researches

        Completed

  1. Childhood Heart Failure in Ibadan. This study assessed the prevalence, underlying factors and short-term prognosis of children admitted with heart failure at the University College Hospital, Ibadan, over a 10-month period.

  2. Prognostic Indices in Pyogenic Meningitis. This study evaluated the various prognostic indices in childhood pyogenic meningitis as seen in children who died of pyogenic meningitis at the Paediatrics Department, University College Hospital, Ibadan, Nigeria

  3. Non- traumatic Paraplegia in Nigerian Children. This study evaluated the major causes of paraplegia in Nigerian children admitted into the UCH, Ibadan over a period of fifteen years. The study also highlighted the poor prognosis associated with this condition in a developing country like Nigeria and the trend in the aetiology of non-traumatic paraplegia over the 15 year period of study.

  4. Resurgence of Measles Epidemic in Nigerian Children. The study highlighted the recent upsurge in the incidence of measles in Nigerian children as seen in Ibadan metropolis, and also evaluated the efficacy of routine childhood immunisation in these children.

  5. Cerebral Palsy in the Nigerian child: diagnosis and beyond. This study assessed the level of care available to children with cerebral palsy in the Nigeria beyond diagnosis. It also highlighted the factors predictive of default from orthodox medical care and the enormous burden of experienced by families of children with cerebral palsy and the absence of social support services in a developing country like Nigeria.

  6. Epilepsy in Nigerian children with cerebral palsy- prevalence, pattern, risk factors and prognosis. This study was carried out to evaluate the proportion of children with cerebral palsy who develop epilepsy. The study also identified the factors that are predictive of associated epilepsy in children with cerebral palsy.

  7. Neurological Disorders in Nigerian Children presenting at the paediatric neurology clinic, University College Hospital, Ibadan. The study was an audit of the pattern and spectrum of paediatric neurological disorders seen at the University College Hospital, Ibadan. The findings of the study are of tremendous value in determining the burden of childhood paediatric neurological disorders in the country.

  8. Childhood bacterial meningitis in Ibadan, Nigeria – antibiotic sensitivity pattern of isolates and outcome. The study identified the major pathogens responsible for a life-threatening disease of childhood. It also evaluated the antibiotics that are effective in the management of the disease.

  9. Ocular abnormalities in children with cerebral palsy. This study assessed the prevalence of eye defects in children with cerebral palsy. The study also reinforced the importance of early diagnosis in improving the outcome in affected children.

  10. Profile of childhood epilepsy in Nigeria. The study is to span five years, evaluating the burden, pattern, medical management and outcome of childhood epilepsies in Nigeria. The findings of the study would fill a major gap in the dearth of information on childhood epilepsies in sub-Saharan Africa.

  11. Sensory and Neurocognitive impairments in cerebral palsy. The study assessed the pattern and burden of neurocognitive and sensory impairments in children with cerebral palsy. The findings of the study would help in improving the level of care available to children with cerebral palsy.

  12. A study on tetanus in the post-neonatal age group. The objectives of this study are to identify the risk factors associated with tetanus in the post-neonatal age group. The findings of the study provided an indirect measure for the evaluation of the efficacy of routine childhood immunization against tetanus in the country.

  13. Invasive pneumococcal disease in under-five Nigerian children. This is a multi-centre study involving three major hospitals in the Ibadan Metropolis. The aim of the study is to evaluate the burden of invasive pneumococcal disease among Nigerian children who are below the age of 5 years and also to identify the serotypes of the isolates. The findings of the study may provide justification for the introduction of the pneumococcal vaccine into the routine immunization programme of the country as its being practised in the developed countries of the world.

  14. Economic costs of childhood epilepsy in Nigeria. The study set out to estimate the average cost of having a child with epilepsy in the family. The findings would provide baseline data for future evaluations of healthcare economic impacts in Nigeria.

  15. I pioneered the work on transcranial Doppler (TCD) ultrasonography in children with sickle cell disease (SCD) in Nigeria. Nigeria has one of the largest burdens of SCD in the world and my publications on TCD ultrasonographic studies in Nigerian children is the first to be published in the country and indeed in children with SCD resident in West Africa and the second to be published in African children.

  16. Predictors of seizure remission in newly-diagnosed childhood epilepsy. The study aims to identify the factors that are predictive of seizure remission and intractability in children with epilepsy. The findings of the study would provide a useful guide to the prompt identification of children who are more likely to require more aggressive treatment to achieve seizure control/remission such that their treatment can be optimized.

  17. Behavioural problems in children with epilepsy. The study evaluated the prevalence and pattern of mental health problems in children with epilepsy using the Rutter A2 scale.

  18. Evaluation of chronic blood transfusion as a primary preventive measure for stroke prevention in sickle cell disease in a resource-poor country. This study assessed the feasibility of the only recommended and effective modality for primary stroke prevention in sickle cell disease in Nigeria, a country with limited resources. The findings of the study highlighted the challenges of chronic transfusion in a resource-poor country and proffers solutions to enhance the feasibility of establishing a successful chronic blood transfusion programme in our setting with limited health-care resources.

    In Progress
  19. Acoustic emissions in children with cerebral palsy. The study involves the use of oto-acoustic emissions as a reliable method of assessing hearing function in children with cerebral palsy.

  20. Use of Hydroxyurea in primary stroke prevention in sickle cell disease. The aim of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of hydroxyurea in reducing mean flow velocities in the intracranial vessels in children with conditional risk and high risk velocities on TCD. This is to explore the feasibility of the potential use of hydroxyurea as a cost-effective treatment modality for stroke prevention in a resource-poor country like Nigeria where periodic blood transfusion, the recognized standard care for primary stroke prevention in SCD is not readily available and the cost of iron chelation are exorbitant, out of the reach of the majority of families.

  21. Complementary and Alternative therapy in treatment of childhood epilepsy in Nigeria. The aim of the study is to assess the extent of use of complementary and alternative therapies in the treatment of childhood epilepsy in our setting and to evaluate the perceived efficacy or otherwise of such treatment modalities. The findings would be useful in bridging some of the wide treatment gap which has posed a major challenge to the treatment of epilepsy in developing countries.

  22. Injuries in children with epilepsy. The study sets out to evaluate the prevalence, pattern and risk factors for injuries in children with epilepsy. This is a comparative study involving children with epilepsy and their age and sex-matched counterparts without epilepsy.

  23. Prospective measurement of stroke incidence in Nigerian children with sickle cell anaemia and elevated TCD velocities treated with hydroxyurea.

  24. Correlation of TCD velocities with cognitive function in children with sickle cell disease

  25. Validation of the Ibadan Simplified Developmental Screening (ISDS) Chart as an indigenous tool for developmental screening in Nigerian children.

  26. Evaluation of early-onset developmental impairments in Nigerian infants attending routine immunisation clinics in Ibadan, using the Ages and Stages Questionnaire.
