Research Focus

My research interest focused mainly on orbital and eyelid disorders and ophthalmic tumors having sub-specialized in oculoplasty and ocular oncology after my training in general ophthalmology. I have over the years researched into these disorders with the aim of better understanding their aetiopathogenesis and ultimately resulting into better management and outcome of these disorders among the Nigerian population.

Research into eyelids disorders

Our research had demonstrated the variation in the range of palpebral dimensions of older children and young adults in our region and presented the normative data that should serve as reference point for these measurements in the region. Through our research, alternative management modalities for congenital upper eyelid eversion in neonates had also been presented.

Research related to orbital diseases and dacryology

Our research has established normative data for exophthalmometric values that will be useful in the management of orbital disorders in our region. Our research had also disputed the widely held opinion that a wider nasolacrimal canal among black population is responsible for the lower prevalence of nasolacrimal duct obstruction among them by demonstrating that the nasolacrimal canal measured radiologically is not wider than other races. Further research questions on the etiology of nasolacrimal duct obstruction has been raised and being addressed.

Research related to ophthalmic tumors

We have researched into the different patterns of presentation of both benign and malignant ophthalmic tumors. The rarity of uveal melanoma in our locality in comparison with conjunctival melanoma, at variance with the Caucasian population had been established. Our research had also documented a strong positive association between ocular surface squamous neoplasia and infection with human immunodeficiency virus, thereby making it a marker for the disease in our region.

Future horizon

We are presently studying the local factors related to retinoblastoma, the most common intraocular malignancy in children through interdisciplinary collaboration using a standard protocol for management.

I am collaborating with the pathologists on possible molecular typing of the common ophthalmic tumors in our region which will ultimately help in predicting the outcome of these tumors, and possibly, their prevention in our populace.
