VIII.      DETAILS OF TEACHING / WORK EXPERIENCE

UNDERGRADUATE LEVEL

  • I teach the following aspects of haematology to MBBS/BDS students: General haematology, haemoglobinopathy, anaemias, haemato-oncology, Acquired and inherited bleeding disorders, Thromboembolic disorders, Blood transfusion, Universal precaution.

I also participate in the practical session and take tutorials

  • As Associate Lecturer for General Studies Programme, I teach “Non communicable diseases (sickle cell disease)” in GES 107.
  • I teach the following topics to Biomedical Science Laboratory students.

Course – HAE 301; Topics taught were: Cell counting; Grouping techniques and antibody screening, clinical significance, secretor status.

Course 302: ABO and Rhesus blood groups, Inheritance, distribution and genetics theory; Plant lectins-preparation and standardization of antisera.

POSTGRADUATE LEVEL;

  • I teach Haematology Masters Students: HAE 721- Blood transfusion.
  • Teaching, supervision and mentoring of Laboratory Medicine residents’ doctors and other residents posted to Haematology Department. I have been involved in the preparation of practical sessions and examinations at all levels of the training in residency training program. I have participated in both written and oral examination of these students at the primary, Part I and part II levels. The teaching entails formal teaching, seminars, daily supervision, review of slides with them, teaching during ward round and journal club. Project supervised include;

          a.   Glucose 6-Phosphate dehydrogenase in sickle cell disease patients.

b Antithrombin activity in steady state and vaso-occlusive crisis in sickle cell disease patients.

  • Serum homocysteine, folate and vitamin B12 levels in patients with deep vein thrombosis in Ibadan.
  • Seroprevalence and risk factors for human T-cell Lymphotrophic Viruses types 1/2 (HTLV 1/2) among blood donors in Jos. (2015).
  • Complement Factor H levels amongst steady state sickle cell anaemia patients at Ibadan, Nigeria.
  • Red cell alloantibodies in patients scheduled for blood transfusion in University College Hospital, Ibadan.
  • Xanthine activity and uric acid level in patients with sickle cell anaemia presenting with vaso-occlusive crises in UCH, Ibadan.
  • Prevalence of high titre alpha and beta haemolysin among blood donors at the blood bank University College Hospital Ibadan.
  • Rh blood group phenotype frequencies in women attending antenatal clinic in University College Hospital, Ibadan.
  • Comparison of HBsAG screening techniques among blood donors in University College Hospital, Ibadan, Oyo State.
  • Managing patients with various haematological disorders at the haematology day care unit, follow-up clinic and on the wards. Patients are also referred to me from the various departments of the hospital and outside the hospital.
  • Supervision blood bank activities and manages patients with blood transfusion related disorders and daily supervises, teach and mentor resident doctors.
  • Moderation and active participation in departmental and interdepartmental seminar sessions as well as journal club.

  • Folate and Vitamin B12 level of apparently healthy Nigerian women.
  • Haematological parameters in patients with sickle cell disease and chronic leg ulcer on compression therapy.
  • In progress
  • Clinical and Laboratory Profile of Patients with Acute Leukaemia in Nigeria – Implication for Management. Data on Patients with Acute Leukaemia with regards to signs, symptoms and laboratory results at the time of presentation and course of disease has been collected. The challenges affecting mortality and morbidity among patients will be assessed. The study is at data analysis stage.
  • Response of Multiple Myeloma Patients in Ibadan to Bortezomib.

The data to assess degree of improvement in morbidity and mortality in this group of patients as well as side effects is ongoing.

  • The Prevalence of Haemoglobinopathy among Patients with Anaemia in Ibadan, Nigeria. This cross- sectional study is to determine the proportion of patients with anaemia with haemoglobinopathy and the frequency of the various haemoglobin variants among the patients to improve the management of patients with aneamia.
