1. Title: Feasibility, Acceptability and Effectiveness of Telephone Based Psycho-Educational Intervention (TBPEI) on Psychological Distress and Suitability Among people Living with Cancer (PLWC) in University College Hospital Ibadan (UCH), Nigeria.
Funder: NCI Grant G-202107-67967
Brief Summary 100-200 words: The objective of the study will be to determine the feasibility, acceptability, and effectiveness of a pilot trial tele-phone-based psycho-educational intervention on psychological distress and suicidality among PLWC in UCH, Ibadan This will be a two-arm study where 110 PLWC will be assigned randomly to the intervention versus waitlist group. The intervention will consist of five weekly psycho-educational sessions focused on the role of psychological distress on well-being, and mental and emotional skill-building. Sessions will be delivered via telephone by five psychologists, who received training on the intervention approach. The primary outcome variables are the   feasibility, acceptability, and effectiveness of a TBPEI. Assessment for primary outcomes will be done through focus group discussion among service providers   and PLWC before the commencement of the study. Secondary outcome variables will be reduction in psychological distress and suicidality which will be   measured by Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) and M.I.N.I (Suicidality module) respectively. Assessments for secondary outcomes will be   carried out at baseline, immediately following intervention and twelve-weeks post intervention. Data will be collected using standardized questionnaire. Qualitative data will be transcribed for content analysis. Expected outcome from this study will be that TBPEI can reduce psychological distress and suicidality among PLWC.
