Brief Biography:

Dr. Mojisola Oluwasanu is a senior lecturer and researcher at the Department of Health Promotion and Education, Faculty of Public Health, College of Medicine, University of Ibadan, Nigeria. She has a Bachelor of Science degree in Human Nutrition (2000), Master of Public Health and doctorate degrees in Health Promotion from the University of Ibadan in 2008 and 2018 respectively. In 2011, she was awarded the Commonwealth Scholarship and obtained a Master degree in Global Health and Non-communicable from the University of Edinburgh, United Kingdom. In 2014, she was a Visiting Doctoral Student at the University of Chicago, USA.

She has over 19 years of experience in the development and academic sector. In the development sector (2004 to 2012), she worked with the Association for Reproductive and Family Health, Nigeria and was involved in the implementation of in-school sexuality education programmes; HIV care and support and community based family planning programmes with funding from several donors. As an academic (2012 to date), her research has focused on Noncommunicable Diseases prevention, especially the behavioural and policy interventions that influence the modifiable risk factors, breast and cervical cancers. She is a recipient of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) D43 training grant at the University of Chicago, USA and an alumnus of the 2018 NIH Training Institute for Dissemination and Implementation Research in Health (TIDIRH). She has disseminated an array of research findings at regional and international conferences as well as published articles in scholarly and peer-reviewed journals.

Mojisola has worked as a Lead/independent Consultant to Oxfam GB Nigeria Office, Marie Stopes International; Population Services International USA, Dexis Consulting and USAID,USA. She has collaborated with other Consultants to provide technical support to Population Media Center, Abuja and USA and the Association for Reproductive and Family Health, Nigeria.

Area of Specialisation

Dr. Oluwasanu started her career in the development sector and has extensive experience conceptualizing, implementing and evaluating in-school sexuality education interventions, HIV care and support programmes for Orphans and Vulnerable Children and People with Living HIV/AIDS and community based Reproductive Health/Family Planning programmes. As she transitioned into a faculty appointment in 2012, her areas of research interest and expertise has evolved to include Health Promotion, Health Policy Research, Noncommunicable Diseases Prevention- with a focus on the four major modifiable risk factors, breast and cervical cancers and Implementation Science.

She was a Doctoral fellow and Qualitative Data Researcher on the Analysis of Noncommunicable Diseases Prevention Policies study conducted in six sub-Saharan African Countries on the extent to which multi-sectoral approaches (MSA) have been used in policy formulation and implementation of the WHO recommended best buy interventions for NCDs prevention in these countries (PI: Prof. Oladimeji Oladepo). She is a member of the Nigerian Breast Cancer study group (PI: Prof. Olufunmilayo Olopade) and her research has evolved to include community and hospital-based studies on cervical and breast cancer as well as a focus on health systems factors which have contributed to the global disparities in cancer outcomes.

1. Title: Implementation research to leverage HIV community-level intervention for breast cancer prevention and control among females in Nigeria’s informal work sector, 2020 to date
Funder:  Kiphart Global Scholar In Medicine award of the University of Chicago, USA
Brief Summary: The first phase of this study is a baseline assessment which aims to investigate the knowledge of breast health and breast cancer screening practices and preventive behaviors among female artisans in Ibadan. In addition, the baseline study will assess the feasibility of implementing integrated HIV and breast cancer prevention and screening programs among female artisans in Ibadan.
