COMMUNITY SERVICE

World Sight Day Committee I have served as an active member of the OSN SW Zone World Sight Day Planning Committee, which organizes annual eye screening and offers free cataract surgery to 100 medically fit patients (including few children) to commemorate the World Sight Day on the 2nd Thursday of October, every year. I participate in fund raising, screening, patient selection and surgery.

Peer-Review: I have been actively involved from 2008 till date Journal and conference abstract reviews Since 2014, I have served as a reviewer of abstracts submitted to the World Ophthalmology Congress, in conjunction with the Scientific Committee. I also serve as a reviewer with different local and international journals.

Professional Workshops in conjunction with Ophthalmological Society of Nigeria.

I have organized, in conjunction with colleagues in other institutions, the annual Neuro-ophthalmology subspecialty day workshops from August 2013, to date. The workshops have featured multidisciplinary lectures, hands-on skills acquisition sessions and presentations from related specialties such as neurology, neurosurgery, cardiology and neuro-radiology. The attendance is open to general physicians, general ophthalmologists, residents, medical students and others. The forum provides an opportunity to educate and enlighten the public about the relevance, importance and availability of neuro-ophthalmology services in Nigeria.

Community Service through the local church: Health education and health promotion - As a member of the New Covenant Church Onireke Medical Team, I deliver 15-20 minute long health talks on topical health issues once a month (as rostered) to provide the church community with health education to prevent disease and promote healthy living. I also volunteer at the bi-monthly, general primary healthcare clinics after service on the first and third Sundays of the month; providing blood pressure screening, weight, height and vital signs measurements and treatment of minor paediatric and adult ailments. We also facilitate secondary and tertiary hospital referrals for more serious conditions.

Religious and moral education : I serve as a counsellor for couples intending to get married, as a member of the Family Affairs Department, New Covenant Church, Onireke Conference Centre, Ibadan since 2002 till date. My duties include organizing monthly pre-marital counselling interview sessions and special programmes (quarterly, family clinics for a larger audience).

iv.  Magnetic Resonance imaging of sellar and parasellar lesions: retrospective review with neuroimaging and clinic-pathological correlation

v.  Factors influencing time to diagnosis of childhood cancer: clinical audit.

vi. Orbital Solitary Fibrous Tumour: case report and literature review.

vii. Soft tissue tumours of the head and neck: Retrospective clinicopathological review.

x.  Neuro-radiology: Normative computed tomography measurement of extra-ocular muscle diameters.

xi. Medical education: Factors influencing uptake of neuro-ophthalmology subspecialty training by trainees and fellows in Nigeria.

xii. Medical education: Comparative assessment of medical students’ perceptions of the learning environment, in two  Nigerian medical schools using different types of curricula.

xiii. Orbital cellulitis: Clinical review.

(b) Research In Progress

i.    Pattern of neuro-ophthalmic disorders in Ibadan

This research started as a pilot study in September 2014. It was a retrospective review of clinical cases seen in the newly established neuro-ophthalmomolgy unit. It was purposed as a needs assessment; to determine the personnel, infrastructural and skills requirements for successful initiation and maintenance of a clinical neuroophthalmology service and to define focused training goals for medical students, residents and potential neuro-ophthalmology subspecialty fellows in the University College Hospital, Ibadan. The project has reached the stage of data analysis and reporting. It should be submitted for publication soon.

ii.  Visual outcome of surgically operated sellar and parasellar tumours

This clinic-pathological study retrospectively reviewed cases of sellar and parasellar intracranial tumours assessed for neuro-ophthalmological status prior to neurosurgical intervention. The postoperative outcome was compared with clinical presentation as well as the histological and radiological findings. Analysis is aimed at identifying possible factors responsible for, or contributing to, the universally poor visual outcome. The difficulty with this study has been with the retrieval of histological records and post-operative outcomes. The data is still being collated.

iii.   Causes of delay in presentation of visually significant intracranial tumours/pathologies

Prospective data was collected from 50 consecutive patients reporting to the neuroophthalmology clinic with visual complaints related to neurological or neurosurgical disease. These patients were either referred from the other neuroscience specialties or first time patients to ophthalmology clinic. Data entry has been completed. The study is at the stage of data cleaning.

iv.  Visual assessment in cerebral palsy

This is an observational study of the pattern of visual impairment and neuroophthalmic presentation of children with cerebral palsy. It will describe the methods used in assessing vision in these children within the context of a limited resource setting. The outcome and compliance with recommended prescriptions will also described. The study is at the stage of data entry.

v.   Thyroid eye disease in Ibadan

This is a prospective multidisciplinary study that is being carried out between ophthalmology, endocrinology, general surgery and nuclear medicine. It aims to describe the pattern of presentation and management of thyroid-related diseases in Ibadan, while working to develop an acceptable guideline for the clinical investigation, management and follow-up of patients in the context of a resourcelimited setting. Though data collection is on-going, at least two preliminary reports have been published in peer-reviewed journals.

(c) Project, Dissertation and Thesis

i.  Investigating candidate genes for X-linked Cone-Rod Dystrophy, in an affected family: Genetics, human genomics research (Institute of Ophthalmology, University College London, Master of Science Thesis July 2007).

ii. Evaluating the potentiating effect of amethocaine on tropicamide-induced mydriasis in darkly pigmented irides: Experimental research using infrared video pupillometry (National Postgraduate Medical College, Faculty of Ophthalmology, Dissertation November 2009)
