Research

a. Current Research and Capacity Building Projects including Grants

1. Title: Eyes of Africa – Genetics of blindness
Funder: NIH and H3Africa
Brief Summary: This is a multi-country and multicentre hospital based prospective case control study is aimed at identifying new susceptibility genes for primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) in order to lay the foundation for novel therapeutic intervention. The aims to enrol 12,000 POAG cases and controls from multiple existing sites in sub-Saharan Africa to add to our existing, genotyped dataset of African ancestry containing 5000 cases and controls. Our preliminary data from the existing dataset clearly shows that the genetic susceptibility loci found in Caucasians and Asians are NOT the primary associations for POAG in Africans. Successful completion of this aim will reveal the unique genetic underpinnings of glaucoma in Africa and suggest new targets for therapeutic intervention.
Role: Co-Investigator
Collaborators: Ashaye A.A, Olawoye O.O, Imaledo J., and Hauser M.A.

2. Title: Effect of Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty in reducing intraocular pressure in Open Angle Glaucoma:
Funder: CARTA
Brief Summary : This is a randomized controlled trial. This study sets out to conduct an internal pilot for a full trial to test the hypothesis that translimbal Direct Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (DSLT) is effective and not inferior to conventional Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT) in reducing intraocular pressure (IOP) in Open Angle Glaucoma (OAG) in Nigeria. A total of hundred and sixty patients will be recruited, eighty patients in each treatment arm of either translimbal Direct Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (DSLT) or conventional Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT) treatment. Participants will be required to visit the clinic for follow up at least 7 times (on day 0, 1,7,30,90,180, and 365) within the 1-year period of the study.
Role: Co-Investigator
Collaborators: Olawoye O.O, Olusanya B., and Realini T.
