Brief Summary: Hypertension is the leading single cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide and a growing public health problem in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). This study seeks to explore the use of MI to achieve a reduction in salt intake among patients with hypertension in Nigeria and Uganda and to achieve better blood pressure control among patients with hypertension in the two countries. The study is based on the hypothesis that motivational interviews would produce a positive behavioural change in the populace leading to a significant reduction in salt intake. A two-arm randomized control trial of 156 adults (78 in Nigeria and 78 in Uganda) aged 18 years and above presenting with Hypertension to the GOPD clinics of the University College Hospital, Ibadan, Nigeria and Tororo General Hospital, Tororo, Uganda, will be systematically selected over six months. This would provide a low-cost measure of BP control and improvement in cardiovascular health among patients with hypertension in Nigeria and Uganda.

Brief Summary: Food insecurity is increasing in many sub-Saharan African countries and disproportionately affecting communities in urban slums. Despite this, the contextual factors that influence food insecurity among slum communities have not been fully documented to guide interventions to prevent and control this growing public health isssue. This study therefore explored the food environment and household food insecurity of these disadvantaged communities.
