DETAILS OF TEACHING EXPERIENCE AT UNIVERSITY LEVEL
From January 1989 till date, my duties have included teaching of undergraduate and postgraduate medical students, first at the Olabisi Onabanjo University (1989 – 1990) and subsequently at the University of Ibadan (December 1992 till date). I was the co- ordinator of the postgraduate training in the department from December 1993 till December 2000.
I teach undergraduate students the following:
a) Acute Upper Respiratory Infections;
b) Pneumonia;
c) Pleural Effusions;
d) Chronic Lung Diseases (Lung Abscess and Bronchiectasis);
e) Bronchial Asthma;
f) Acute bronchiolitis; and
g) Upper airway obstructions.
I give seminars in social paediatrics focusing on health indicators, statistics and indices for evaluating community health status. I started teaching this from 1995 till date.
I take turns with other lecturers in the department in presiding over seminars, which focus on the relationships between socio-economic and environmental factors, and childhood diseases.
I give bedside teachings and tutorials on clinical evaluation of patients with respiratory diseases; and clinical demonstrations during the weekly Asthma Clinic.
I take turns with other lecturers in the department to examine in depth as the lead discussant at the weekly grand round, selected subjects, in order to marry academic and clinical considerations for the benefit of undergraduate and postgraduate students.
SUMMARY OF TEACHING /RESEARCH EXPERIENCE
I have 30 years of teaching and research experience in paediatrics, first as a resident doctor (1982-1988), second as a research clinician at the MRC Laboratories, The Gambia and finally as a lecturer in the Department of Paediatrics, University of Ibadan, Ibadan, Nigeria. It was during the period I was working at the MRC Laboratories, that I explored the interface between childhood malnutrition and respiratory diseases. The work in this field culminated in a Doctor of Medicine (MD) Thesis titled: Pneumonia in Malnourished Gambian Children.
I am fully engaged in the teaching of pneumonia, upper respiratory tract infections and asthma to the undergraduate medical students of the University of Ibadan, Ibadan, Nigeria. Postgraduate students in Paediatrics receive clinical teachings during the consultant ward rounds.
I have published 56 peer-reviewed papers and two books in the disciplines of paediatric respiratory medicine, malariology, gastroenterology and general paediatrics in high impact journals.
