Focus of Research

My research efforts have focused on malaria in children, the sub-segment of the population of malaria endemic areas that takes the brunt of the infection. By a conservative estimate about two million deaths result from malaria annually and over 70% of these deaths occur in sub-Saharan Africa. Contrary to earlier beliefs, malaria has acquired the status of a pandemic and no longer a disease of tropical endemic areas of the world only. My research into malaria is a holistic one which covers many areas of Malariology  in an effort to contribute in some way to the control of this parasitic infection. I have worked on the evaluation of various treatment modalities and improving the management of malaria, an infection that is responsible for more deaths than the dreaded HIV/AIDS.

My collaborators and I work in active collaboration with the Malaria Control Units of both the State and Federal Ministries of Health so that our research findings can be made available and also be  meaningfully incorporated into policy for the benefit of children in malaria endemic areas in general and Nigerian children in particular. My research focus can be broadly summarized into five subgroups as follows:

  1. Diagnosis and Management of Malaria
  2. Chemotherapy of Malaria
  3. Malaria in Pregnancy and the newborn
  4. Epidemiology of malaria among HIV positive patients.
  5. Antimalarial Compounds from Nigerian Phytomedicine Compendium
